At the turn of the twentieth century, Luxembourg transformed from a country of emigration into a destination for migrants. Alongside European newcomers, at least 200 people from the Americas, Africa, and Asia settled in the Grand Duchy before the Second World War. They worked in steelworks and construction, practiced as journalists, lawyers, and doctors, traded and ran businesses, or entertained audiences as dancers, circus performers, and musicians.

»Indésirables« from Overseas traces the life stories of several of these migrants, as well as of travelers from outside of Europe who did not intend to settle permanently. Through these individual trajectories, it offers both a social history of migration and an entangled history of Luxembourg.

The author, Julia Harnoncourt, will introduce the structure of the book, present one of the migrant life stories in more detail, and discuss the sources and methods used to reconstruct these mobile lives.

The book has been published in German by capybarabooks in collaboration with the C²DH.
