Dr. Daniel RICHTER

Daniel Richter is a postdoctoral researcher in migration history, under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Denis Scuto for the Chaire Histoire & Migrations. This position is funded by the University of Luxembourg and the City of Dudelange, in cooperation with the Centre de Documentation sur les Migrations Humaines (CDMH).

Daniel Richter’s doctoral research examined migration in early twentieth-century Luxembourg by investigating worker quarters with high migrant populations. Using census and civil records alongside qualitative sources, he reconstructed the life histories, mobility patterns and social structures of individuals. Building on this experience, his current research focuses on the history of migration in Luxembourg and the Greater Region, based on a longitudinal study of migrants’ life histories.

Previous outreach activities included co-creating physical and digital exhibitions, such as minett-stories.lu and ‘Voices from the Minett’, which were developed by interdisciplinary teams at the C²DH in collaboration with Studio Calibro as well as the Tokonoma collective.
Building on these experiences, ongoing outreach activities include exhibitions, editorial work for a migration history revue, workshops, conferences and cooperation with the Centre de Documentation sur les Migrations Humaines (CDMH) and the City of Dudelange.

His doctoral thesis won the ‘Best PhD Thesis Award 2024’ from the C²DH and the Dr Roswitha and Hermann Zeilinger Foundation and was also nominated for the ‘Excellent Thesis Award’ from the Doctoral School.
Additionally, he contributed to collaborative, award-winning outreach projects at the C²DH with external partners. These include the ‘Dibner Award for Excellence in Museum Exhibits’ (2023) from the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT) for www.minett-stories.lu (Studio Calibro) and the National Research Fund of Luxembourg (FNR) Award for ‘Outstanding Promotion of Science to the Public’ for the interactive video installation ‘Voices from the Minett’ (Studio Tokonoma).

Daniel Richter obtained his Bachelor in European Cultures and History and a PhD in History at the University of Luxembourg. He also completed a Master of Public History at the Freie Universität Berlin in Germany.
