The University of Luxembourg Alumni Network organised its first Alumni Summer Party on Wednesday 3 July at the Foundry, a hidden gem in Luxembourg City with a beautiful outdoor garden. More than 110 alumni attended the event, which featured entertainment provided by Uni.lu community members, from TEDx Talk beatbox expert Apollon Beatbox to Luxembourg Eurovision 2024 candidate Hugo One.
Apollon Beatbox is Uni.lu alumnus Johannes Heuschkel, a beatboxer, producer and loopstation artist from Germany. With more than 15 years experience, he creates music in various genres ranging from pop to techno to drum and bass. While studying psychology at the University of Luxembourg, he co-founded the non-profit organisation GoldenMe with fellow student Mara Kroth, which fosters digital inclusion through a community of young and elder members. Today, Apollon loves spreading the art of beatboxing through workshops and one-on-one beatboxing lessons. In his TEDx Talk, he argued that anyone can beatbox and taught the audience the basics on the spot. He certainly demonstrated just that during his performance at the Summer Party. “The Alumni Summer Party was great fun!” said Johannes. “I loved seeing some familiar faces and also many new ones. I had a blast performing in front of an amazing crowd, who learned to beatbox within minutes. Thanks again for organising and see you soon at the next Uni.lu alumni party.”
Hugo One is a stage name of Hugo Dejean, a Communication Officer at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance (FDEF). With formal training in music, Hugo has performed at prestigious venues such as the Philharmonie de Luxembourg and also briefly shared the stage with the iconic Anastacia at Den Atelier. His musical palette draws inspiration from soul, pop, and disco. At the Alumni Summer Party Hugo performed several songs, including his original song Summer Palpitations, which he had debuted for Luxembourg’s national Eurovision selection. “I really enjoyed the event and the atmosphere,” shared Hugo. “You could see that everyone was very happy to catch up with each other and we were blessed with good weather where it didn’t rain, so we managed to stay outside. I also loved being able to sing for everyone that was present. I could see that some people were singing along and was very appreciative of it. Here’s to many more alumni parties!”
With an annual networking event taking place in autumn for the last two years, the Alumni Network is hoping to make the summer party an annual thing too. “The summer party was a great next step in the development of the Alumni Network, with alumni from 65 different programmes having registered,” says Andy Adams, Alumni Relations Specialist and responsible for the Alumni Network. “With the launch of our new alumni platform last October, we are now equipped to build a multi-layered alumni engagement experience together with the faculties and study programmes. Just this week there was also an alumni event hosted by the Doctoral School of Law as well as an event to celebrate the launch of the new History group for alumni from the Master in European Contemporary History and the Bachelor en Cultures Européennes – Histoire programmes. It’s been an incredible week!”
