Securing quantum communications: a talk with Prof. Symeon Chatzinotas

Quantum communications will revolutionise cybersecurity, and Luxembourg is ideally positioned to be a frontrunner in this space. “In fact, the Grand Duchy is well on track to be the first European country with a full-fledged national QCI infrastructure, which will open countless opportunities for residents and companies alike,” says Prof. Symeon Chatzinotas, Head of the Signal Processing and Communications research group at SnT.

To support this effort, researchers at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) have been working for years on this topic, and recently launched two major projects in this sense.

The Luxembourg Quantum Communication Infrastructure Laboratory (LUQCIA) is a five-year project to build a national testbed for quantum communication infrastructure (QCI) and enable advanced collaborative research in this domain. Launched in March 2022 by SnT, the project is funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU, with the collaboration of Luxembourg’s Department of Media, Connectivity and Digital Policy.

The Luxembourg Experimental Network for Quantum Communication Infrastructure (Lux4QCI), a project co-funded by the Digital Europe Programme under Grant Agreement number 101091508, aims to build an EU-wide QCI by connecting national infrastructures with each other. It was launched in February 2023, by a consortium of seven partners that SnT, represented by Prof. Symeon Chatzinotas, is leading as coordinator.
