Protecting intellectual property (IP) is a vast subject, and each avenue comes with potential pitfalls and benefits. As a specialist in IP management at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust at the University of Luxembourg (SnT), Itzel Saldivar has years of experience in designing successful IP protection strategies. Recently, she described some of the challenges associated with IP management in a column for the Times Higher Education’s publication THE Campus.

The column was published by THE Campus as a highlight on research management, found here.

In the piece Saldivar highlights common misconceptions about patents, copyright, and trademarks, highlighting the crucial role of a University’s Technology Transfer Office in academia. She states that current figures suggest that only 6 to 7 per cent of successful patents are licensed or commercialised globally because of a general misconception of what a patent is. “They are only a tool, one of many, to take research from the lab to the real world, and they don’t operate in a vacuum,” writes Saldivar.
