The Fondation Pierre Werner, a foundation active under the aegis of Fondation de Luxembourg, on 19 March officially awarded scholarships to three postgraduate students from the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance whose research addresses themes of banking resolution, EU legal systems and orders, as well as urbanisation.
The Pierre Werner Scholarship was created to help support a new generation of researchers focused on EU-related issues. It is dedicated to the memory of Pierre Werner, former Prime Minister of Luxembourg and champion of the European Union and European integration.
The scholarship was awarded for the first time in 2018. The third call for applications is currently ongoing.
The second cohort of laureates includes two doctoral candidates in law, and one student of the Master in Economics and Finance – Research Track who is expected to advance to the Doctoral School in Economics and Finance next year:
- Ioannis Asimakopoulos (Greece), doctoral candidate in law, preparing a thesis on the topic of “The retail challenge to bail-in: Making bank resolution immune to retail investors”
- Selen Arli Yilmaz (Turkey), Master student, preparing a dissertation on the topic of “Evaluating impacts of selected EU policies in terms of GHG emissions in Luxembourg towards EU targets” with a view to pursuing this research further at PhD level.
- Panagiotis Zinonos (Cyprus), doctoral candidate in law, preparing a thesis on the topic of “L’identité du système constitutionnel de l’Union européenne: étude juridique sur la réalisation de la confiance ”
The candidates were shortlisted by a selection committee at the University of Luxembourg, including Prof. Katalin Ligeti (Dean of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance), Prof. Jörg Gerkrath (Head of the Doctoral School of Law) and Prof. Tibor Neugebauer (Programme Director for Finance at the Doctoral School in Economics and Finance) and validated by the Management Committee of the Fondation Pierre Werner.
At a special reception hosted in their honour on 19 March, scholarship recipients were able to present the progress of their research to representatives of the Fondation Pierre Werner, the Fondation de Luxembourg and the University of Luxembourg academic community.
They were welcomed by the Dean, Prof. Katalin Ligeti, who congratulated them on their achievement, Luc Frieden, President of the Fondation Pierre Werner, and Guy De Muyser, member of the Management Committee of the Fondation Pierre Werner, who wished them the best of success for the continuation of their studies.
