The University of Luxembourg, in partnership with the Universities of the Greater-Region, Liège, Lorraine and Kaiserslautern, as well as the consultancy company ICSEED, hosted the fourth TRNSYS Experience Seminar on 19 and 20 April 2018 in Belval. This was again a great opportunity to join research, engineering & consultancy around the energy challenges.
Energy used in residential and commercial buildings represents about 40% of the EU’s global energy consumption*. Thus, many efforts are currently done to significantly increase the energy efficiency of buildings. Digital modelling software is playing a prominent role in building energy management and optimisation. Depending on the type of building and the problem to be solved, either stationary model software or software allowing dynamic calculations are used.
TRNSYS is one of the world’s most popular dynamic modelling software for buildings and technical installations. It is a powerful tool to reach energy efficiency as well as high level of comfort.
Under this scope, TRNSYS Experience is a seminar that aims to promote technical and relational exchanges between TRNSYS users at an international level. This also provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the current state of research, the latest developments in the field of simulation software and the use of TRNSYS for engineering and consulting services.
Mainly orchestrated by Prof. Frank Scholzen from the Research Unit in Engineering Sciences (RUES) at the University of Luxembourg and Dr. Julien Carton, manager at ICSEED , the fourth TRNSYS Experience gathered 50 participants from different universities and companies. The audience was very international, the participants came from 9 different countries all around Europe and as far as Japan. The presentations mainly focused on case studies and exchanges between research and practice. They introduced research projects and real cases promoting dynamic thermal/energy simulation as a powerful and meaningful tool for designing or auditing buildings and energy systems.
The attendees also took part in a guided tour of the Belval Campus with the visit of the blast furnaces and the “Cité des Sciences”. Indeed, Belval was a perfect location to host this seminar as the University of Luxembourg is building there a completely new campus based on a historical industrial site.
TRNSYS Experience 2018 was the fourth seminar after Nancy in 2015, Kaiserslautern in 2016 and Arlon in 2017. The next event is scheduled for 2019 or 2020.
