Members of the international project “Modular Energy Islands for Sustainability and Resilience” (MODENERLANDS) met at the University of Luxembourg on 15-16 May 2023 for the first strategic workshop. More than 40 participants attended the event on Belval campus.

The objective of MODENERLANDS is to combine and organise the efforts of European research and development groups working on sustainable energy and related technologies, specifically wind, solar and wave sources. It revisits the use of modular, cost-effective, and sustainable energy islands as potential components in future sustainable energy infrastructure plans, designs, and developments. The main focus is to optimise the capture and conversion of renewable energy sources and effectively transmit them to the grid.

During the workshop hosted by Anina Glumac, research scientist and Stéphane Bordas, professor in computational mechanics at the University of Luxembourg, participants exchanged about the technical challenges and industrial opportunities associated with energy floating islands, with a particular emphasis on research and innovation.

The project is funded by the EU funding programme COST which supports researchers in setting up their interdisciplinary research networks in Europe and beyond.
