For the second time, the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) at the University of Luxembourg has supported the Goodyear STEM Student Challenge.
With this initiative, Goodyear promotes technical skills among high school students in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The challenge is to create a lever machine intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and overcomplicated fashion. Overall, 8 teams registered for the Challenge, summing up in 34 participants out of 6 different high schools. 4 teams were eventually selected to virtually present their machines to a multi-organisational jury panel during the final Live-Demo Event.
Prof. Serge Haan, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) was a member of the jury for this competition.
“Winning this event means finding a resourceful way to approach a challenge taking an interdisciplinary approach and combining STEM disciplines such as engineering, physics, computer science, mathematics and sometimes chemistry. This is what our faculty is about and therefore we need to support such initiatives.“
The finals of this event took place on 5 July 2021 at Goodyear Innovation Center in Colmar-Berg. Due to current pandemic, the event was held in hybrid mode, with the jury being largely on site and the students presenting their machines online.
