Across a wide range of academic disciplines there is increasing concern that empirical results cannot be reproduced because of a lack of transparency in the research process. There is increasing anxiety that it is impossible to verify the results presented in many research papers. There is now a growing interest in authors providing extra materials alongside publications to enable other researchers to understand, evaluate and build upon prior work. These materials should include sufficient information for a third party that is unconnected with the original work to reproduce results without any additional information being provided by the authors.

Vernon Gayle (Professor of Sociology and Social Statistics, University of Edinburgh) will give a talk on transparent and reproducible research drawing on insights from data science and e-research. As a leading expert in this field, Vernon will share his methodological reflections and posit a set of guidelines for undertaking transparent and reproducible social science research.
