International Geographical Union / Union Géographique International (IGU/UGI)

National Committee Luxembourg constituted

On February 13, about 30 Geographers from various fields (teachers, planners, civil servants from public authorities, researchers from LISER and uni.lu) gathered on Campus Belval to inaugurate Luxembourg’s National Committee for the IGU/UGI.

The committee represents the geographers from the Grand Duchy in the IGU/UGI, our global umbrella organization. It is also dedicated to promote our discipline domestically. Amongst other activities, a “Day of Geography” is foreseen to be organized annually, addressing a broader public by giving insights into geographers’ fascinating work.

The committee’s founding members include Georges Hengesch (representing the secondary school teachers organized in the Association Luxembourgeoise des Enseignants de Géographie – ALEG), Patrick Bousch (Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research – LISER), and Malte Helfer (University of Luxembourg, Department of Geography and Spatial Planning). Further members are supposed to join the committee shortly, including colleagues working as ‘applied’ geographers.
