On July 1st and 2nd the first online IMISCOE*-Conference has been organized by the Erasmus-University of Rotterdam together with the University of Luxembourg (Uni.lu team involved in the Conference Committee: Birte Nienaber, Nicole Holzapfel-Mantin) and Open University.
More than 800 participants attended the online conference.
The conference focused on the topic “Mobilities and Immobilities in Pandemic times” with two keynote speakers Anna Triandafyllidou, Professor of Sociology (“Mobility and belonging at pandemic times”) and Biao X, Professor of Social Anthropology (“The redistribution of mobilities”). Together with the speakers, the participants reflected on the implications of COVID-19 for migrants and what migration research can do for those who are most affected by this crisis.
The 2 conference days included a broad program: plenaries with the keynote speakers, a roundtable discussion, panels, about 100 parallel sessions covering different aspects of migration studies. In addition, a program for PhD students focussing on topics such as ethics, fieldwork or life after a PhD as well as an elaborated social program addressing migration and diversity (cooking, dancing, special theatre performance, music and visual arts) have been offered.
The next IMISCOE-conference “Crossing borders, connecting cultures” will take place in Luxembourg from July 7 to July 9, 2021, Campus Belval.
We are looking forward to it!
