Migration and Inclusive Societies (MIS), the new research priority of the Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities and Arts and Education, won the bid to host the 17th IMISCOE Conference on “Crossing borders, connecting cultures”.
International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion (IMISCOE) is the largest and most renowned European network of scholars in the area of migration and integration. The conference will take place from 30 June – 2 July 2020 at the University of Luxembourg. 800-1,000 participants are expected from all over Europe.
This large conference is an exciting opportunity for the Faculty and the University to highlight their international academic reputation by welcoming renowned migration-scholars in Luxembourg to advance research on migration, one of the most pressing societal, economic, and political challenges of the 21st century.
The conference will zoom deeper into the migration experience of people by foregrounding how migration is being connected to culture. It will explore the nexus of migration and culture in more depth asking how migration is lived, experienced, reflected in, and mediated, in particular, through cultural and artistic practice.
The IMISCOE Conference seeks to investigate this lens as a way to deepen the understanding of the complexity and difference of migration experience, on the one hand, and the possibilities of connecting different migrant experiences and groups of people, on the other.
Research on migration has been a priority for the University of Luxembourg since its foundation. The University supports research in the diverse fields of migration through its interdisciplinary character and networking. The location of Luxembourg, a country located at the heart of the “Schengen-Area” and at the same time in a “very bordered world” (Diener and Hagen, 2012), as well as the involvement of our University in the University of the Greater Region enable research excellence in the fields of migration and cross-border research.
