Medical sociology and social epidemiology have long documented strong associations between individuals’ social position and their health status and health behaviors. However, explaining how such inequalities are reproduced over time remains a challenge. The concept of Cultural Capital offers a theoretically sound and empirically innovative approach to understand how material and non-material resources interplay in
the social distribution of the chances to live a healthy life. French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu first introduced the notion of Cultural Capital referring to three major forms namely, embodied, objectified and institutionalized Cultural Capital. In this talk, I provide an introduction into the concept of Cultural Capital and how it is currently applied by health researchers to explain social differences in health and illness, health-related practices, and the nature of interactions with various aspects of healthcare systems. Strengths and weakness of the concept will be addressed and opportunities for future applications discussed.
