Risk factor identification is crucial to the primary prevention of disease and injury.  Central to this endeavour is the utilisation of large-scale, deeply-phenotyped cohort studies derived from either traditional field work; individual participant meta-analysis of multiple cohorts (data pooling); or linkage of electronic

health registries (data informatics).  Having hitherto almost exclusively examined risk factors for non-communicable

disease – vascular disease, selected cancers, neurodegenerative disorders – in this presentation I will describe how we pivoted

our attention during this pandemic to explore the role of socioeconomic, lifestyle, and biological characteristics in the occurrence of COVID-19.  I will also discuss our smaller body of work on psychological predictors of vaccine hesitancy.  Lastly, I will briefly reflect on the impact of the industrial-scale production of papers in epidemiology and other fields during the COVID-19 crisis.
