Does spatial proximity erase social inequalities? “Social mix” and gay-friendliness in gentrified areas (France and the USA)
AbstractWhile “diversity” has become a crucial goal for city planners, many scholars have raised doubts about the local benefits of a “social mix”. Does spatial proximity necessarily erase social inequalities? Sylvie Tissot will use her fieldwork in gentrified neighbourhoods to bring to light persisting boundaries between wealthy and low-income residents, as well as between straight residents and their gay and lesbian neighbours.
