ABOUT

The aim of my talk is to describe a recent Hungarian study investigating some of the antecedent scales to foreign language learning motivation. The sample consists of secondary school students living in Budapest, the most cosmopolitan area of the country. The questionnaire results indicate that apart from various motivational dispositions, some emotions also have significant impact on the amount of effort students are willing to invest into language learning. In terms of the motivational scales: ideal L2, perceived importance of contact and cultural interest seem to be decisive for motivation. Concerning emotions, hope, pride and enjoyment show the strongest correlation with students’ effort. The implications of the study will be discussed in the European context and future research ideas will be offered.
