ABOUT

Young people who are currently immigrating to Germany generally have extremely heterogeneous knowledge of their respective first languages or of various other languages. The extent to which these existing skills can be used for further education depends decisively on how much we learn about them. The research project Language Awareness – Mehrsprachige Fähigkeiten wahrnehmen (LAWA) is dedicated to this challenge and has developed a corresponding format to survey the abilities of young migrants in the field of text competence. As a first step, it is important to recruit subjects who, despite their rudimentary knowledge of German, are willing and able to communicate about their own language learning biographies and their approach to text understanding. In the lecture, the survey design of this first step will be presented, followed by insights into further work steps.

is Professor for German Didactics at the University of Vechta (Germany). Her fields of research are: Language awareness and multilingualism, Reading and writing abilities of immigrant learners, Curriculum development in multilingual classes, and Professionalization of teachers in subject-based language learning.

Forthcoming: Monika Angela Budde & Magdalena Michalak: Deutsch als Zweitsprache. Eine Einführung in den systematischen Anfangsunterricht. Stuttgart:Metzler.
