Their joint project will focus on developing a concept to increase the efficiency, degree of automation and flexibility of\u00a0Rotarex\u2019s\u00a0product assembly process\u00a0through the use of\u00a0collaborative robots.\u00a0<\/p><p>The production of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rotarex.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Rotarex<\/a>\u00a0gas control devices\u00a0is\u00a0a far from simple process. Each individual product has its own complex set of requirements and constraints. Like every production line,\u00a0Rotarex\u00a0constantly improves its system to produce high quality products, as fast and efficiently as possible with the lowest rate of failure. With such a vast array of units to be produced, and each product needing to be individually customised, it is not an easy task.\u00a0Rotarex\u00a0is keen on optimising production in terms of time and cost efficiency.\u00a0<\/p><p>Currently, human workers across\u00a0Rotarex\u2019s\u00a0production line have an essential role, as they can adapt to each unit\u2019s individual specification very quickly. However, they need to be well trained and highly focused for long periods of time. During peak sales periods in the year,\u00a0Rotarex\u00a0needs to considerably increase its workforce to cope with demand, and requires them to\u00a0work day\u00a0and night.\u00a0In order to\u00a0address this challenge,\u00a0Rotarex\u00a0are trialling a \u2018collaborative\u2019 robot \u2013 essentially where a robot and human work cooperatively on their production line. However, this process is not fully optimised, requiring avoidable, time-consuming human\u00a0interventions.<\/p><p>As a partner,\u00a0SnT\u00a0will work with\u00a0Rotarex\u00a0for the next three years on developing the robot\u2019s\u00a0abilities, and\u00a0upgrading its capacity of working effectively alongside human workers. Speaking about the collaboration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/carlo-thom-79423911\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Carlo Thom<\/a>,\u00a0Rotarex\u00a0Group CIO said, \u201cWe\u00a0are in need of\u00a0a reliable and highly flexible robot that can be implemented across our sites, to work in collaboration with our employees on the production line. We hope that this partnership with\u00a0SnT\u00a0will revolutionise our production methods to allow for a much smoother and efficient workflow.\u201d<\/p><p>The team is comprised of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstm\/doe\/members\/holger_voos\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof. Holger Voos<\/a>, head of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/snt\/research\/automation_robotics_research_group\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Automation and Robotics research group<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/snt\/people\/jose_luis_sanchez_lopez\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Jose-Luis Sanchez-Lopez<\/a>, a research scientist, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/snt\/people\/alireza_barekatain\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Alireza Barekatain<\/a>, a doctoral candidate. Speaking about the project\u2019s progress so far, Sanchez-Lopez said, \u201cOur work with\u00a0Rotarex\u00a0has just begun, with the first year being dedicated to understanding the robot\u2019s needs to avoid malfunctioning and to increase its flexibility.
