As we continue to explore deeper into our solar system, self-sufficient missions are going to become a necessity, as immediate access to life-sustaining cargo will be out of reach. Our current efforts to venture into space result in a high consumption of resources, but if we can understand how to gather\u00a0resources such as\u00a0water, building materials and energy \u2013 in the form of fuel and power \u2013 within space, then we can reduce our dependence on needing to stay\u00a0within range of help.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>This was just one of the topics covered last month at SnT\u2019s Forward to the Moon webinar, organised in collaboration with\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spacegeneration.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Space Generation Advisory Council<\/a>\u00a0(SGAC). SGAC is a global, non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation representing the space youth at the United Nations &#8211; the largest network in the world for students and young professionals within the space community. They work diligently to raise awareness for the next generation of space professionals. The event explored a research area that is receiving attention from scientists around the world: what role will the moon have in the future of our space exploration?<\/p><p>Forward to the Moon saw a host of speakers take part, including experts from the SGAC and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/space-agency.public.lu\/en.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Luxembourg Space Agency<\/a>. From SnT,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/snt\/people\/miguel_angel_olivares_mendez\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Miguel Angel Olivares-Mendez<\/a>,\u00a0head of the Space Robotics (SpaceR) research group,\u00a0spoke about numerous aspects of space exploration \u2013 including the legal, economic and technical realms.\u00a0<\/p><p>The panellists discussed the added value that the moon may potentially hold when it comes to space exploration. Indeed, it\u2019s expected to hold the key for us to spread ourselves further beyond than we\u2019ve ever gone before. This area of research\u00a0has seen scientists put their heads together to\u00a0find out how we can use the resources in space to our advantage.\u00a0The moon\u2019s close proximity to Earth makes it the perfect environment for us to conduct scientific experiments and exploration.\u00a0<\/p><p>Speaking during the stream, Olivares-Mendez said,\u00a0\u201cThere is a need to have a playground on the moon to test what we can do on Mars and in space. We have to learn how to extract from the resources what we need for construction, to support life and to have shelter.\u201d Indeed, future astronauts will need to understand how they can use the resources around them in order to keep themselves, and their crew, alive. Being able to extract a resource that can be transformed into air, nutrients and water for plant growth, and rocket propellants, will transform the capabilities of a mission.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201c95% of the weight of a spacecraft is fuel\u2026 I believe we have reached a limitation on space exploration\u00a0[and]\u00a0that we need to have a \u2018gas station\u2019 on the moon [for us to explore further],\u201d\u00a0he continued.\u00a0In fact,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/isru\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA is developing technologies<\/a>\u00a0that will enable excavation\u00a0of\u00a0deposits\u00a0found on the moon, Mars and asteroids.
