Since\u00a0LuxAI<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0inception as a spin-off of\u00a0SnT\u00a0in\u00a02016, their\u00a0QTrobot\u00a0has received international praise for its\u00a0success\u00a0in\u00a0engaging\u00a0with children who have autism.\u00a0On Friday 2 April, World Autism Awareness\u00a0Day,\u00a0they announced their expansion into social robots for the home.\u00a0<\/p>

For\u00a0those with autism, adapting to change is not an easy process. Taking into consideration the COVID-19 pandemic,\u00a0parents\u00a0have had to\u00a0take on the role of\u00a0educators. The knock-on effect of this is\u00a0a\u00a0lack of specialised care to those who need it most, and an increase in anxiety levels for both parties\u00a0\u2013 two\u00a0impacts that are just scratching the surface of the challenges faced during this time.\u00a0In fact, in a\u00a0study<\/a>\u00a0looking at the impact of social isolation on children, including those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the majority of those with ASD reported negative emotion management, and higher\u00a0average\u00a0scores of\u00a0anxiety\u00a0in both the child and parents. It\u2019s this consequence of the pandemic that has made\u00a0LuxAI\u2019s\u00a0QTrobot\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0Home<\/a>\u00a0a breakthrough for children with autism and their caregivers.<\/p>

Announced\u00a0last week, the\u00a0QTrobot\u00a0for Home enables children to\u00a0receive\u00a0a learning experience that \u2013 quite literally \u2013 speaks directly to them. Using techniques such as soft speech,\u00a0as well as\u00a0engaging facial expressions and body\u00a0language,\u00a0one\u00a0study showed this resulted in children benefitting from a higher attention span, improved focus and reduced disruptive behaviour when working with the robot compared to a person.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cIt\u00a0can be difficult for parents to know where to start\u00a0with educating any child, but the challenge is greater when taking responsibility for special needs education,\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0Aida\u00a0Nazarikhorram<\/a>, Co-Founder and CMO of\u00a0LuxAI. \u201cChildren with autism are drawn to technology, because it\u2019s consistent, predictable and non-judgemental.\u00a0In the form of a robot, this\u00a0helps children to generalise the\u00a0skills\u00a0they learn\u00a0from interacting with\u00a0the technology\u00a0and transfer them to social situations,\u201d she continues.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cA simple wave to say hello may be something they\u2019ve been trying to teach their child for a long time, but with the\u00a0QTrobot\u00a0they were able to learn it quickly. It\u2019s truly amazing to hear the positive feedback from parents, as they frequently see a big difference in their child\u2019s attention and motivation to work.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

Up to now, the\u00a0QTrobot\u00a0was only available to healthcare professionals,\u00a0in specialist autism centres or research organisations.\u00a0While the\u00a0original costs $10,000 US, the home version\u00a0is\u00a0$1,977 US with a \u20ac145 subscription fee per month to benefit from\u00a0LuxAI\u2019s\u00a0support\u00a0\u2013 including a monthly meeting with\u00a0their\u00a0special\u00a0needs\u00a0education team,\u00a0to support parents using the device.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

So\u00a0what exactly does it do? In short, everything its advanced predecessor can. It teaches children with autism how to process their own emotions, as well as recognising the emotions of others, how to improve their social skills and deal with teasing, and even supports early-stage development for children up to the age of 4.\u00a0\u201cWe want children to be able to reach their maximum potential, and for this they may need a lot of hours of training,\u201d Aida explains.\u00a0\u201cWe\u00a0will\u00a0continually develop new content and materials,\u00a0so that the\u00a0QTrobot\u00a0becomes\u00a0more advanced\u00a0as the child grows older,\u00a0to support their education over several years.\u201d<\/p><\/div><\/section>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
