While\u00a0some\u00a0of us wouldn\u2019t think twice about making online transactions, in developing countries these\u00a0can be even more\u00a0susceptible\u00a0to\u00a0fraudulent attacks\u00a0due to insecure networks.\u00a0<\/p><p>In 2020, INTERPOL released a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interpol.int\/en\/News-and-Events\/News\/2020\/Online-crime-in-Africa-a-bigger-threat-than-ever-before-INTERPOL-report-warns\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>\u00a0highlighting the severity of online organized crime in Africa, indicating that \u201conline crime presents a bigger security threat for law enforcement than ever before\u201d.\u00a0Although just 28% of Africans used the internet back in 2019, compared to 83% in Europe, this has not stopped the growth of criminal activities. In fact, the cost of\u00a0cyberfraud\u00a0doubled between 2017 and 2018, to the tune of $6.5million US.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The risk of falling victim to\u00a0cyberfraud\u00a0in Africa\u00a0is\u00a0one of the highest in the world. It\u2019s this risk that inspired the collaboration between many public and private partners in Luxembourg, including\u00a0SnT, in the creation of not-for-profit consortium\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cyber4dev.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Cyber4Dev<\/a>.\u00a0Last week,\u00a0their efforts resulted in the launch of the African Cybersecurity Resource Center for Financial Inclusion (ACRC), a project that will see them help millions of vulnerable people\u00a0alongside\u00a0thousands of banking institutions across Africa.\u00a0<\/p><p>Paperjam\u00a0featured the announcement last week, sharing how\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/paperjam.lu\/article\/luxembourg-au-coeur-cybersecur\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Luxembourg is at the heart of African cybersecurity<\/a>.<\/p><p>Cyber4Dev\u00a0has brought together experts from\u00a0SnT, securitymadein.lu, the Cybersecurity Agency for the Luxembourg Economy and Municipalities,\u00a0Excellium\u00a0Services SA\u00a0and Suricate Solutions in Senegal.\u00a0It is a European Union project designed to promote cyber-resilience and cybersecurity, with a multi-million Euro investment backing behind it.\u00a0In March, the African Development Bank allocated a grant of $2million to open the\u00a0centre.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Having worked on the\u00a0project,\u00a0SnT\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/snt\/people\/tegawende_francois_d_assise_bissyande\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof.\u00a0Tegawend\u00e9 Bissyande<\/a>\u00a0shared:\u00a0\u201cWe are very excited to join forces with Cyber4Dev to tackle cybersecurity challenges in Africa on the critical domain of financial services in developing countries.
