{"id":308,"date":"2021-03-23T15:06:28","date_gmt":"2021-03-23T15:06:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/website.prod.unilu.spikeseed.cloud\/snt-fr\/news\/students-design-groundbreaking-satellite\/"},"modified":"2021-03-23T15:06:28","modified_gmt":"2021-03-23T15:06:28","slug":"students-design-groundbreaking-satellite","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/snt-fr\/news\/students-design-groundbreaking-satellite\/","title":{"rendered":"Students Design Groundbreaking Satellite"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\"><p>In less than two semesters, the\u00a0first cohort of\u00a0students\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ism.uni.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Interdisciplinary Space Master<\/a>\u00a0(ISM) have successfully conceived, designed and developed GOLDCREST, a CubeSat project launched as part of their studies\u00a0with the aim\u00a0to measure\u00a0Earth\u00a0soil moisture from space.<\/p><p>The team of\u00a0ISM students collaborated remotely to conceive the 1U CubeSat, a small satellite measuring just 10 cm3.\u00a0The satellite has been designed to measure soil moisture using GNSS reflectometry, where measurements are performed using GPS signals.\u00a0\u201cMeasuring soil moisture is an active\u00a0field\u00a0of research in the world today, so choosing that as the focal point seemed a good goal,\u201d says\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Thoemel, Head of the CubeSat laboratory who led the students in this endeavour.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>CubeSats have been a catalyst for change within the space industry. While they have been used experimentally in recent times, they are becoming increasingly popular with hundreds of launches scheduled for the next couple of years.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cWhat is special about our satellite is its size.\u00a0Using\u00a0a CubeSat\u00a0to perform these measurements\u00a0would bring\u00a0its\u00a0technology to a wider audience,\u201d\u00a0he continues.\u00a0Very small satellites are cheaper to produce, therefore\u00a0the subsequent data collection\u00a0could\u00a0be available at a cheaper cost.\u00a0In the same way that smartphone technology has been gradually filtered down at a lower price point\u00a0over time, CubeSats\u00a0such as\u00a0GOLDCREST\u00a0would\u00a0allow for the analysis to be shared with smaller agricultural entities who ordinarily may not be able to afford access to such technology.\u00a0<\/p><p>A NASA mission with a similar goal\u00a0is the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS). The project uses satellites 30 times bigger than GOLDCREST to measure wind speed over oceans with GPS to predict the occurrence of hurricanes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The\u00a0GOLDCREST\u00a0project and its entire mission was presented at the Asteroid Day\u00a0event\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4W3KgckDHMA\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Space Connects Us<\/a>\u201d,\u00a0organised\u00a0last year\u00a0by the Asteroid Foundation and co-founded by astrophysicist and musician\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Brian May. Asteroid Day is the official United Nations\u2019 day of global awareness\u00a0and shares education about asteroids, their importance in our history as well as the role they play in our solar system.\u00a0<\/p><p>Speaking about the project, ISM student\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lu.linkedin.com\/in\/stepanova-natalya\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Natalya Stepanova<\/a>\u00a0said,\u00a0\u201cIt was quite challenging, starting from the beginning, to work on the subsystems, but at the same time it has been fascinating to see how the project has been quickly evolving from the rough requirements and assumptions to the concrete design of a real CubeSat!\u201d.\u00a0<\/p><p>Indeed, GOLDCREST is a great example of the\u00a0project based\u00a0learning approach of the Master\u2019s programme, which aims to shape the next generation of space entrepreneurs, researchers and professionals in Luxembourg. The Master was launched in 2019, together with the <a href=\"https:\/\/space-agency.public.lu\/en.html\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Luxembourg Space Agency<\/a> (LSA) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/meco.gouvernement.lu\/en.html\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Ministry of Economy<\/a>. \u201cThe most valuable aspect of the ISM is the unique combination of the courses, which provides us with a\u00a0360\u00b0-degree overview of the space industry and connects us to experts in the field,\u201d concluded fellow student\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/niloufar-asadi-43a444107\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Niloufer\u00a0Asadi<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>But the journey of GOLDCREST has not ended there. \u201cThe next cohort of students will develop the mission further by looking into open design questions and answering them,\u201d\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Thoemel shares. \u201cThe future of the project\u00a0aims to\u00a0refine GOLDCREST\u2019s design and\u00a0extend the satellites ability to measure soil moisture, into detecting bodies of water\u00a0such as rivers.\u201d<\/p><p><\/p><p><i><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/snt\/people\/jan_thoemel\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Jan Thoemel<\/a>\u00a0is a Research Scientist, head of the CubeSat Laboratory at\u00a0SnT\u00a0and a lecturer at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ism.uni.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Interdisciplinary Space Master<\/a>. He received his Ph.D. in 2008 at RWTH Aachen University in Germany and the von Karman Institute in Belgium, where he researched the physics of gas surface interaction. Dr. Thoemel previously worked in the space sector, including for the European Space Agency, the Royal Institute for Space Aeronomy,\u00a0GomSpace\u00a0and the von Karman Institute.
