The<a href=\"https:\/\/payid-blocksprint.devpost.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0PayID BlockSprint Hackathon<\/a> started on 25 September and lasted two weeks. It was organised by<a href=\"https:\/\/ubri.ripple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Ripple<\/a> and<a href=\"http:\/\/blockchain.cs.ucl.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0UCL\u2019s BlockSprint<\/a> to push the development of PayID further.<\/p><p>Right from the start Dr. Shbair and the team knew they wanted to tackle the privacy flaws of the current PayID system. Their challenge was figuring out how to do so, and then creating a solution, all in just two weeks.<\/p><p>Before they began the PayID server was set-up in a way that made it possible for anonymous users to access the payment information of anyone using the service. This exposes the users of PayID to privacy concerns, as payment information includes an individual\u2019s bank account details, bitcoin address, and\/or<a href=\"https:\/\/xrpl.org\/xrp.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0XRPL address<\/a>.<\/p><p><figure class=\"wp-block-dev4-reusable-blocks-image  object-fit--contain\">\n    \n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-image unilux-custom-image-block\"\n                alt=\"\"\n            src=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2023\/07\/payidsecure_challenge.jpg\"\n                srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2023\/07\/payidsecure_challenge-300x162.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2023\/07\/payidsecure_challenge-768x414.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2023\/07\/payidsecure_challenge.jpg 806w\"\n                style=\"object-position: 50.00% 50.00%; font-family: &quot;object-fit: contain; object-position: 50.00% 50.00%;&quot;; aspect-ratio: 16\/9; object-fit: contain; width: 100%;\"\n        loading=\"lazy\"\n\/>    <\/figure>To address this our researchers set out to make it possible to encrypt the payment information of a PayID user, and only grant access to other users they had on a list of trusted individuals. To do this they used the Access Control List (ACL) feature and Decentralized Identity (DID). By combining these technologies they were able to create a system that would certify a user\u2019s identity, and enable them to be granted access permissions to the payment information they need. That meant avoiding an approach that put more burdens on the PayID users. We are proud that we managed to integrate the cutting-edge technology of Decentralized Identity of Hyperledger Indy in the PayID server successfully in two weeks,\u201d said Dr. Shbair, Research Associate at SnT. \u201cNow we have a full working prototype of the enhanced privacy preserving PayID server.\u201d<\/p><p>100 people participated in the hackathon, and three projects received honorable mentions in addition to the traditional top three prizes. The first prize our team received was $15,000 in XRP (a digital currency).<\/p><p>\u201cPrivacy is a complex matter and it is easy to reflect that complexity when trying to protect it, but we wanted to stay true to PayID\u2019s simple approach of moving money like email,\u201d\u00a0 said Dr. Shbair. \u201cWe really pushed ourselves to make a secure solution that fit the simplicity of the system itself.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cWe are proud and acknowledged to be part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ubri.ripple.com\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Ripple UBRI project<\/a>,\u201d said Prof. Radu State. \u201cBeing able to interact with engineers from Ripple is a privilege and life-changing experience.\u201d<\/p><p><\/p><p><\/p><\/div><\/section>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to our researcher\u2019s recent first place win in the PayID BlockSprint Hackathon!
