It is cutting edge 3D computer vision and imaging technology, put in the school as part of a special partnership between SnT\u2019s own computer vision team, the Luxembourg Ministry of Education, Children and Youth, and the LESC community. The partnership, called \u00ab\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/smartschoul2025.uni.lu\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Smart Schoul 2025<\/a>\u00a0\u00bb and made possible through the FNR\u2019s Promoting Science to the Public (PSP) \u00ab\u00a0Flagship\u00a0\u00bb Grant, encourages students to become what <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/snt\/people\/djamila_aouada\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Djamila Aouada<\/a>, leader of the project and researcher at the University of Luxembourg&rsquo;s Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), calls \u00ab\u00a0citizen scientists\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-dev4-reusable-blocks-image  object-fit--contain\">\n    \n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-image unilux-custom-image-block\"\n                alt=\"\"\n            src=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2023\/07\/pic1.jpg\"\n                srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2023\/07\/pic1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2023\/07\/pic1.jpg 450w\"\n                style=\"object-position: 50.00% 50.00%; font-family: &quot;object-fit: contain; object-position: 50.00% 50.00%;&quot;; aspect-ratio: 2\/3; object-fit: contain; width: 100%;\"\n        loading=\"lazy\"\n\/>            <p class=\"wp-block-dev4-reusable-blocks-image-caption\">\n            Dr. Djamila Aouada in the Artec3D Shapify Booth        <\/p>\n    <\/figure><p><\/p><p><\/p><p>Using the Shapify Booth, students take their body measurements for any project they could imagine \u2014 from 3D printing miniature \u00ab\u00a0selfies\u00a0\u00bb as board-game pieces, to calculating statistics about the ways they grow, and more. The goal is to pique their curiosity and encourage them to see complicated technologies not as daunting or static, but as useful tools that they can apply throughout their lives.<\/p><p>And the Shapify Booth is just the beginning. Over the next three years, Dr. Aouada and her team will bring a host of computer vision and imaging technologies to the school. The team will soon be installing technology from their motion and posture sensing project, STAR, which was originally designed to help stroke patients in physical rehabilitation. But at the moment, they are doing a lot of listening to learn about the students\u2019 interests. \u201cWe want to give them tools that they are excited about,\u201d says Dr. Aouada.<\/p><p>Both engineering and computer science can be intimidating subjects for students without mentors and role models in the field. Dr. Aouada aims to provide a fun, approachable entry point, sparking their curiosity to learn the basics of working with code, data, and algorithms. \u201cComputer vision is an ideal example of computer science and engineering because it is intuitively understandable, almost immediately perceivable, and it can play a part in many aspects of daily life,\u201d she explains.<\/p><p>Dr. Al Ismaeil, research associate at the University of Luxembourg&rsquo;s SnT, is project manager of the project and hopes that it will give students important life skills, regardless of whether they go on to work directly in ICT. \u201cHaving access to this 3D scanner and the data it produces will give them the opportunity to really understand what private data is, where it comes from, and how to use it responsibly,\u201d he says.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0Our goal is to help shape tomorrow\u2019s digital citizens,\u00a0\u00bb Dr. Aouada continues. And that doesn\u2019t mean encouraging students to use consumer technologies \u2014 today\u2019s young students already know their way around an iPad. Rather, these \u00ab\u00a0digital citizens\u00a0\u00bb need to learn how to use technology creatively, as independent and responsible agents.
