\u201cIn 15 years of your mandate as director,\u00a0Bj\u00f6rn,\u00a0you\u00a0have built up a critical mass of IT experts. You\u00a0have been able to combine scientific excellence\u00a0and\u00a0applied research among\u00a0SnT\u2019s\u00a0staff. You\u00a0have created\u00a0trustful partnerships\u00a0with\u00a0many\u00a0partners.\u00a0You have created a\u00a0talent factory in IT.\u00a0You have made\u00a0SnT,\u00a0but also\u00a0the University\u00a0of Luxembourg,\u00a0a strategic instrument of the country.\u201d With these words, the University of Luxembourg\u2019s rector\u00a0Prof. Jens Kreisel<\/a>\u00a0honoured\u00a0Prof.\u00a0Bj\u00f6rn Ottersten<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0achievements.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The University of Luxembourg\u2019s Interdisciplinary Centre of Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) celebrated the stewardship of its founding director Prof. Ottersten in Neum\u00fcnster Abbey on 30 January 2024. He ended his mandate as director at the end of 2023 and, over the course of his 15 years, shaped SnT into the vibrant research centre it is today. Now, SnT is a team with more than 500 members, all focused on one vision: research with impact.
 
SnT\u2019s community gathered this week to celebrate this moment, and to commemorate the legacy that Bj\u00f6rn Ottersten has built. Luxembourg\u2019s University rector Prof. Kreisel opened the proceedings with a tribute summarising the many colours of Prof. Ottersten: his colours as a researcher, as a manager, and as a person. \u201cI admire your perservance and your internal compass. (\u2026) All that has created security among your students, staff, colleagues, and partners,\u201d rector Prof. Kreisel emphasised. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gerard Hoffmann<\/a> <\/a>and Anne-Catherine Ries<\/a> <\/a>followed suit, sharing their memories of Prof. Ottersten as he built his career and then SnT. \u201cI think of Bj\u00f6rn as an enabler. When we think back, when I was at the time in the ministry, we all had one conviction, one mission that was that information technology is something that makes Luxembourg broader than it is. (\u2026) The key driver when you don\u2019t know exactly what is needed are the right people. With Bj\u00f6rn, we were able to step by step always bring research and excellence in line with the assets that Luxembourg had,” shared Anne-Catherine Ries. 

Prof. Bart De Moor<\/a> illuminated the audience as our keynote speaker, giving insight into the common aspects of research he shares with Prof. Ottersten.
 
Closing the event, Yves Elsen<\/a> offered his words of gratitude for Prof. Ottersten’s commitment to the University and Luxembourg, followed by our incoming director Prof. Yves Le Traon<\/a> wrapping up with the presentation of gifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
