From 1 January 2023, Prof. Ottersten will serve as one of the 22 distinguished researchers representing the European scientific community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/snt\/people\/bjoern_ottersten\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Prof. Ottersten\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof. Ottersten<\/a> joins four other scientists and scholars as new members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/erc.europa.eu\/about-erc\/erc-president-scientific-council\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Scientific Council\" rel=\"noopener\">Scientific Council<\/a>, who are appointed by the European Commission on the recommendations of an independent identification committee. The Scientific Council\u2019s main role is setting the ERC strategy and overseeing the peer review process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ERC was established by the European Union in 2007 and is the premier European funding organisation for excellent frontier research. It funds creative researchers of any nationality and age to run projects based across Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of its four main grant schemes, Prof. Ottersten has notably been the recipient of two <a href=\"https:\/\/erc.europa.eu\/apply-grant\/advanced-grant\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"ERC Advanced Grants\" rel=\"noopener\">ERC Advanced Grants<\/a> and two <a href=\"https:\/\/erc.europa.eu\/apply-grant\/proof-concept\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"ERC Proof-of-Concept Grants\" rel=\"noopener\">ERC Proof-of-Concept Grants<\/a> for his research on signal processing in complex systems. He is a Fellow of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieee.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"IEEE\" rel=\"noopener\">IEEE<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/eurasip.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"European Association For Signal Processing\" rel=\"noopener\">EURASIP<\/a>, with his research being recognised by numerous awards, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/universite\/actualites\/latest_news\/snt_director_receives_ict_award_highest_international_honor\" target=\"_self\" title=\"IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Achievement Award\" rel=\"noopener\">IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Achievement Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking about the achievement, Prof. Ottersten shared, \u201c<i>As a former ERC grantee, panel assessment member, and reviewer, I am deeply aware of the key role played by the Council in fostering excellent European research. From now on, I look forward to participating in the ERC governing body to contribute to the advancement of European research.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The appointment to the ERC Scientific Council represents another significant achievement in Prof. Ottersten\u2019s brilliant career, characterised by important contributions to both industry and academia. He is the author of numerous scientific publications and patents, and Professor of Signal Processing, former Head of the Department for Signals, Sensors, and Systems, as well as Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kth.se\/en\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Royal Institute of Technology\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Institute of Technology<\/a> (KTH), Stockholm. In 2009, Prof. Ottersten was the founding director of our <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/snt\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust\" rel=\"noopener\">Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust<\/a>. He has also served as Digital Champion of Luxembourg, adviser to the European Commission and member of the boards of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vr.se\/english.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Swedish Research Council\" rel=\"noopener\">Swedish Research Council<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/strategiska.se\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research\" rel=\"noopener\">Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research<\/a> respectively.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, shared, \u201c<i>The ERC Scientific Council is composed of outstanding European scientists and scholars who oversee Europe\u2019s premier frontier research funding organisation. To name just one recent example of its success &#8211; three of this year\u2019s Nobel Prize laureates have received substantial funding for their research from the European Research Council. Today, I am delighted to give a warm welcome to the five new members who bring to the ERC Scientific Council exceptional scientific expertise, which will complement that of the sitting members.
