In fact, to re-edit or mass-manufacture physical objects, CAD models are still required in Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) pipelines.\n\nHowever, CAD modelling is a time- and cost-intensive process, as it requires the expertise of highly qualified engineers. What if, though, we could simply scan the objects and let computers automatically deduct CAD models from them? This technique, often referred to as \"3D reverse engineering\", has been a long-sought-after goal in the CAD industry due to the amount of resources that is expected to save.\n\nThe FREE-3D project focuses on developing AI algorithms that automatically learn modern CAD procedures by acquiring parametric representations from 3D scans, leveraging their geometrical and topological structures, and exploiting the sequential nature of CAD procedures.
