We log in and identify ourselves digitally \u2013 dozens if not hundreds of times a day \u2013 to check our e-mails, use our social media apps or access our online subscriptions. Stakes are high for users, private sector service providers and public sector administrations, and significant challenges and responsibilities lie ahead in the secure and careful handling of large amounts of personal data. Retaining privacy and preventing malicious or accidental data leaks, will be essential in building and retaining trust in digital identity systems. \n\nFor citizens, privacy concerns are high, in particular when their identity data is linked to financial or health information. Moreover, they worry about usability, control, and the security of their sensitive personal data. For companies, from healthcare providers to the financial sector and transport industry, inefficient management and exchange of sensitive (personal) data reduces competitiveness, and complicate compliance with regulatory frameworks. \n\nThe European Union has recently reflected on these stakes by amending its eIDAS regulation on electronic identification, authentication and trust services.
