Dr. Abd El Rahman SHABAYEK

Abd El Rahman is a Research Scientist in the CVI² research group at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), University of Luxembourg. He leads research activities across several projects focused on space and energy applications. In addition, he is registered as an Expert with the European Commission.

His research advances the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Computer Vision, with a focus on developing efficient deep neural networks for spatial and terrestrial applications. He brings a strong interdisciplinary background, having contributed to a range of research topics at several prestigious universities.

He has authored over 50 scientific publications and has received two best paper awards. His work has earned him an h-index of 16. He regularly serves as a reviewer for leading journals and conferences in the field, including those published by IEEE and Springer, as well as for international conferences such as IROS, AAAI, ICCV, and CVPR.

Dr Shabayek has contributed to the teaching of the Computer Vision module within the International Space Master’s programme at the University of Luxembourg. He was a visiting scholar in the highly competitive VIBOT Erasmus Mundus programme in Computer Vision and Robotics in 2014, 2015, and 2016, and continued to deliver regular annual lectures in the programme until 2021.

Dr Shabayek actively contributes to outreach initiatives by teaching AI and Computer Vision concepts to adolescents through AI summer camps, supported by the Ministry of Education and the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR).

In addition to his fundamental research, he has been involved in applied research collaborations with industrial and academic partners across sectors including healthcare, 3D scanning, energy, and space technologies. His current work focuses on the application of AI in the domains of space and energy.

Dr Shabayek was awarded the prestigious Erasmus Mundus scholarship to pursue his MSc studies in Computer Vision and Robotics. He subsequently received a competitive doctoral grant from the Regional Council of Burgundy, France. His research has been recognised with two best paper awards for work on 3D deformation transfer and 3D skeletal feedback. He also led the proposal development for two successful projects funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and CORE programmes.

Prior to his current role, Dr Shabayek served as Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Computers and Informatics, Suez Canal University. He has also held adjunct academic positions at the Information Technology Institute and Sinai University in Egypt. Additionally, he worked as a part-time Project Manager at EULA-Soft, gaining experience in industry-led technology projects.

Dr Shabayek earned his PhD in Computer Vision and Robotics in 2012 from France, following his Erasmus Mundus Master’s in the same field in 2009, with studies undertaken across the United Kingdom, Spain, and France. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Egypt, obtained in 2005.
