SUMMARY:Doctoral Guest Lectures in Transport, Environmental and Spatial Economics
DESCRIPTION:Decarbonizing the Airline Industry – Evidence and Policy\n\nAbstract\n\nThe guest doctoral lectures focus on carbon emissions from the airline industry. They will begin with a discussion of Brueckner et al. (2017) paper, which relates airline fuel usage to a variety of factors, including fuel price. The price effect is used to predict the reduction in fuel usage and carbon emissions resulting from an optimal environmental fuel tax. The carbon reduction effect from a tax can also be estimated at the level of individual aircraft models, rather than solely at the airline level; relevant results from Brueckner et al. (2020) will also be presented. Subsequently, findings from Brueckner et al. (2024) will be discussed, showing how fuel prices affect flight speeds, utilization of inefficient aircraft, and fleet retirement decisions, all of which affect carbon emissions. The final part of the lecture will focus on the “cash-for-clunkers” concept in the airline industry. This paper proposes a policy under which airlines would be paid to scrap retiring aircraft rather than sell them for continued, environmentally detrimental use.\n\nAbout the speaker\n\nProfessor Jan K. Brueckner is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of California, Irvine, and a Faculty Associate of ITS Irvine. He earned his A.B. in Economics with distinction from UC Berkeley in 1972 and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1976. With over 150 published papers, his research spans urban economics, public economics, real estate finance, and notably the economics of the airline industry. He served as editor of the Journal of Urban Economics from 1991 to 2007 and has held visiting appointments at institutions worldwide. His accolades include fellowships with the Regional Science Association International and the Air Transport Research Society, as well as awards such as the Richard Musgrave Prize and the John M. Quigley Medal.\n\nLanguage\n\nEnglish.\n\nThis is a free lecture. Registration is mandatory.\n\nLocation: https://www.uni.lu/en/about/campuses/weicker-building/\nRead more: https://www.uni.lu/research-en/events/doctoral-guest-lectures-in-transport-environmental-and-spatial-economics-3/
