This book was recommended to me by Douban, ranking 4th in their 2024 annual list. It delivered a truly remarkable reading experience, telling us both a story and a profound lesson. The story spans sixty years of mutual influence between Emperor Kangxi and missionaries, exploring cultural clashes between East and West\u2014specifically the conflict between Catholic doctrine and Chinese traditions. The lesson emphasizes that when studying history, we must adopt the perspective of contemporaries and avoid intentional or unintentional filtering or editing of historical materials.The author’s solid theoretical foundation and deep historical research strike a balance between the book’s academic rigor and accessibility. If you enjoy Qing Dynasty history, I highly recommend this book\u2014it’s an excellent and fascinating historical monograph.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
