She did a double degree in Chemistry\/Environmental Engineering in Perth, Australia, subsequently working as a consulting environmental engineer for three years. After completing her PhD in chemistry (Leipzig, Germany) in 2011, she joined Eawag, Switzerland, embarking on a prestigious 2-year Marie Sklodowska Curie International European Fellowship.<\/p><p>In September 2017, she joined LCSB at the University of Luxembourg to build up the Environmental Cheminformatics Group, with <a href=\"https:\/\/recruitment.uni.lu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">several positions currently advertised<\/a>. She recently featured on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theanalyticalscientist.com\/power-list\/2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">The Analytical Scientist\u2019s \u2018Top 40 under 40\u2019 list of analytical scientists<\/a>.<\/p><p>Dr. Schymanski\u2019s husband, Stan Schymanski PhD, received an FNR ATTRACT fellowship in 2016; they are the first dual career couple to both benefit from this scheme.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"big-data-for-small-molecules\"\n    >\nBig data for small molecules<\/h2>\n<p>The \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0003267017314575\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">unknown<\/a>\u201d small molecules have the potential to reveal many secrets about causes of disease, human activities, organisms and their interactions with the environment.<\/p><p>The aim of Dr Schymanski\u2019s research group and ATTRACT project \u2018<i>Environmental Cheminformatics to Identify Unknown Chemicals and their Effects<\/i>\u2019 (ECHIDNA) is to develop methods to identify these unknown chemicals and their effects on health and disease.<\/p><p>The long-term aim within LCSB is to uncover causal links between environmental factors and diseases such as Parkinson\u2019s disease.\u00a0<\/p><p>Dr. Schymanski\u2019s research tackles complex chemical and environmental challenges with <a href=\"https:\/\/jcheminf.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s13321-018-0299-2\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">cheminformatics<\/a> and computational <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/acs.est.7b02184\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">non-target mass spectrometry<\/a> approaches that push the boundaries beyond the \u201cstatus quo\u201d. She is involved in extensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/EmmaSchymanski\/dmcm2018-community-resources-connecting-chemistry-and-toxicity-knowledge\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">community<\/a>, outreach and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/full\/10.1021\/acs.est.7b01908\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Science<\/a> efforts (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/massbank.eu\/MassBank\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">MassBank<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s13321-017-0207-1\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">CASMI<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/comptox.epa.gov\/dashboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">CompTox<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norman-network.com\/?q=node\/236\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">NORMAN Suspects<\/a>) and has already helped build and shape community thinking with a well-received <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/full\/10.1021\/es5002105\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">viewpoint article<\/a> that has changed the way scientists consider and report identifications.<\/p><p>For more information:<\/p><p>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/lcsb\/research\/environmental_cheminformatics\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">The Environmental Cheminformatics group page<\/a><\/p><p>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.lu\/citations?user=ypFbzJQAAAAJ\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Emma Schymanski Google Scholar Profile<\/a><\/p><p><\/p><p>&#8212;<\/p><p>About the FNR ATTRACT programme:<\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnr.lu\/funding-instruments\/attract\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">ATTRACT programme<\/a> is designed for researchers not yet established in Luxembourg, who demonstrate the potential to become leaders in their field of research. The scheme offers promising junior researchers the opportunity to set up their own research team within one of the country\u2019s research institutions. The financial contribution by the FNR can be up to 1.5 MEUR for Starting Investigators (Postdoc &#038; Junior Researcher level) or 2 MEUR for Consolidating Investigators (Established Researcher level). In the 2018\/19 Call, the FNR expects to be able to fund 2 projects. Projects have a lifespan of 5 years.
