It is the only university in Luxembourg, a country developing a knowledge-based economy in a unique multicultural environment. The Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) is one of three Interdisciplinary Centres of the University of Luxembourg.<\/p><p>Set up in 2009, the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/lcsb\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine<\/a>\u00a0(LCSB)\u00a0is a globally recognised research centre for Systems Biomedicine. It is currently home to 16 research groups with a staff of over 230 people. Its researchers publish in renowned journals, work together with scientific partners worldwide and carry out cooperative projects with clinics and research-oriented companies. The 2020 budget for the centre amounts to \u20ac26 million, \u20ac11 million of which come from external sources. The LCSB is in charge of several international research programs, coordinates a national patient cohort, hosts students of the doctoral schools and participates in the teaching programmes of the University.<\/p><p>The LCSB uses experimental and computational approaches to investigate complex biological systems and disease mechanisms. It aims to accelerate biomedical research by strengthening the links between systems biology and medicine. Neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson\u2019s Disease are at the centre of research carried out at the LCSB, along with other chronic diseases sharing similar mechanisms. Collaboration between biologists, medical and computer scientists, physicists, engineers as well as mathematicians offers new insights into these complex systems. The LCSB\u2019s strategy focuses on this interdisciplinary approach, with core skills in genetics and functional genomics, metabolomics, imaging, and bioinformatics.<\/p><p>* * *<\/p><p>In view of the pending retirement of the LCSB\u2019s founding Director, Professor Rudi Balling, the University of Luxembourg is searching for a successor.<\/p><p>The new Director will offer visionary thinking, together with an ability to lead, in order to further develop the LCSB\u2019s excellence in research and teaching.\u00a0<\/p><p>Applicants should be medically qualified and have a strong research profile as well as clinical experience. They are expected to have internationally recognised expertise in systems biomedicine, with a focus that may add new areas of research or is in line with existing fields of excellence. Leadership skills acquired in a research setting are expected. This is a full-time position. Fundraising experience and previous interactions with industry are assets.<\/p><p>In addition to fluent English, the new Director is required to be able to read and follow conversations in French. If necessary, the appointee will be given a period of two years to achieve fluency in French, with the University providing a budget. Knowledge of Luxembourgish or other languages may be an advantage.<\/p><p>The appointment as Director is made by the Board of Governors of the University of Luxembourg for an initial period of five years.
