{"id":1474,"date":"2025-03-21T12:06:26","date_gmt":"2025-03-21T11:06:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/lcsb-fr\/?post_type=news&#038;p=1474"},"modified":"2025-03-27T11:31:46","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T10:31:46","slug":"polluants-eternels-plongee-en-eaux-troubles","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/lcsb-fr\/news\/polluants-eternels-plongee-en-eaux-troubles\/","title":{"rendered":"Polluants \u00e9ternels, une plong\u00e9e en eaux troubles"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-spacer is-spacer-size-lg\"><\/div>\n\n\n<section class=\"py-0 wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<p>\u00c0 l&rsquo;occasion de la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/fr\/observances\/water-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Journ\u00e9e mondiale de l&rsquo;eau<\/a>, nous nous penchons sur les \u00ab polluants \u00e9ternels \u00bb, ces produits chimiques qui ont r\u00e9cemment fait parler d&rsquo;eux lors de la publication par le projet Forever Pollution d\u2019une <a href=\"https:\/\/foreverpollution.eu\/map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">carte listant pr\u00e8s de 23.000 sites contamin\u00e9s dans toute l&rsquo;Europe<\/a>. Puis \u00e0 nouveau l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 dernier lorsque le Pesticide Action Network Europe a r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pan-europe.info\/resources\/reports\/2024\/07\/tfa-forever-chemical-water-we-drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pr\u00e9sence g\u00e9n\u00e9ralis\u00e9e d\u2019acide trifluoroac\u00e9tique dans des \u00e9chantillons d&rsquo;eau potable provenant de 11 pays de l&rsquo;Union europ\u00e9enne<\/a>. Prof. Emma Schymanski et Dr Federica Piras, chercheuses \u00e0 l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9es dans l\u2019\u00e9tude des compos\u00e9s chimiques dans l\u2019environnement, nous aident \u00e0 examiner les faits de plus pr\u00e8s, \u00e0 explorer la longue histoire de ces compos\u00e9s chimiques et \u00e0 r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 la situation actuelle de nos ressources en eau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"des-produits-chimiques-ayant-une-longue-histoire\"\n    >\nDes produits chimiques ayant une longue histoire<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Le terme \u00ab polluants \u00e9ternels \u00bb est utilis\u00e9 pour d\u00e9signer une vaste cat\u00e9gorie de produits chimiques synth\u00e9tiques&nbsp;: les substances perfluoroalkyl\u00e9es et polyfluoroalkyl\u00e9es (PFAS). Elles se caract\u00e9risent par la liaison tr\u00e8s stable form\u00e9e par des atomes de carbone et de fluor dans leur structure. La connexion entre ces deux \u00e9l\u00e9ments, l&rsquo;une des plus solides de la chimie organique, ne se rompt pas facilement, ce qui explique leur \u00e9tiquette de polluants \u00e9ternels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les PFAS ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9crits d\u00e8s la fin des ann\u00e9es 1930 et sont aujourd&rsquo;hui largement utilis\u00e9s pour leurs propri\u00e9t\u00e9s antiadh\u00e9sives et imperm\u00e9abilisantes ainsi que pour leur r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 la chaleur. On les trouve dans des produits tr\u00e8s divers comme les tissus imperm\u00e9ables, la peinture, les \u00e9crans de t\u00e9l\u00e9phones portables et certains cosm\u00e9tiques. Comme ils ne se d\u00e9gradent pas et circulent facilement dans notre environnement, leurs effets sur la sant\u00e9 ont fait l&rsquo;objet d&rsquo;\u00e9tudes approfondies, surtout dans&nbsp;le cas des PFAS historiques utilis\u00e9s \u00e0 l&rsquo;origine par l&rsquo;industrie. Leur dangerosit\u00e9 a notamment d\u00e9fray\u00e9 la chronique lors du scandale DuPont, qui a mis en lumi\u00e8re la contamination des r\u00e9serves d&rsquo;eau d\u2019une commune am\u00e9ricaine par une usine locale rejetant de l\u2019acide perfluorooctano\u00efque (PFOA) pendant des ann\u00e9es, une histoire qui a ensuite inspir\u00e9 le film Dark Waters. Deux PFAS historique, le PFOA et le PFOS, ont depuis \u00e9t\u00e9 associ\u00e9s \u00e0 diff\u00e9rentes pathologies dont des cancers, des naissances pr\u00e9matur\u00e9es et des maladies thyro\u00efdiennes, et leur utilisation est r\u00e9glement\u00e9e par la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pops.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Convention de Stockholm sur les polluants organiques persistants<\/a>, depuis 2009 (restriction du PFOS) et 2019 (interdiction du PFOA) respectivement.<br><br>\u00ab Malheureusement, cette r\u00e9glementation a d\u00e9clench\u00e9 un m\u00e9canisme connu sous le nom de \u2018substitution regrettable\u2019, ce qui signifie que les industriels ont d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 de nouveaux compos\u00e9s pour remplacer les PFAS historiques \u00bb, explique le <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/lcsb-en\/people\/emma-schymanski\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">professeur Emma Schymanski,<\/a> responsable du groupe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/lcsb-en\/research-groups\/environmental-cheminformatics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Environmental Cheminformatics<\/a> au <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/lcsb-fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine<\/a> (LCSB). \u00ab Au fil du temps, nous avons constat\u00e9 que certains des PFAS \u00e0 cha\u00eene plus courte qui ont remplac\u00e9 le PFOS et le PFOA restent \u00e9galement dans l\u2019environnement et provoquent des effets ind\u00e9sirables sur la sant\u00e9.&nbsp;\u00bb Aujourd&rsquo;hui, d\u2019apr\u00e8s les derni\u00e8res d\u00e9finitions, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.est.3c04855\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on estime \u00e0 plus de 7 millions le nombre de produits chimiques appartenant \u00e0 la cat\u00e9gorie des PFAS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"section section wp-block-unilux-blocks-headline-text-and-image py-0\">\n    \n<div class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-wrapper container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"le-tfa-un-probleme-emergent\"\n    >\nLe TFA, un probl\u00e8me \u00e9mergent<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-wrapper flex flex-wrap lg:-mx-32\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-wrapper w-full lg:w-7\/12 lg:order-2 lg:px-32\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-image-video-wrapper\">\n    <figure class=\"wp-block-dev4-reusable-blocks-image  object-fit--cover\">\n    \n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-image unilux-custom-image-block\"\n                alt=\"\"\n            src=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2025\/03\/2025-03-20_TFA_ChemicalStructure_LongFormat_Credits3Dstories.png\"\n                srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2025\/03\/2025-03-20_TFA_ChemicalStructure_LongFormat_Credits3Dstories-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2025\/03\/2025-03-20_TFA_ChemicalStructure_LongFormat_Credits3Dstories-1024x554.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2025\/03\/2025-03-20_TFA_ChemicalStructure_LongFormat_Credits3Dstories-768x416.png 768w, https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2025\/03\/2025-03-20_TFA_ChemicalStructure_LongFormat_Credits3Dstories-1536x832.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2025\/03\/2025-03-20_TFA_ChemicalStructure_LongFormat_Credits3Dstories-2048x1109.png 2048w\"\n                style=\"object-position: 52.00% 39.00%; font-family: &quot;object-fit: cover; object-position: 52.00% 39.00%;&quot;; aspect-ratio: 3\/2; object-fit: cover; width: 100%;\"\n        loading=\"lazy\"\n\/>            <p class=\"wp-block-dev4-reusable-blocks-image-caption\">\n            Repr\u00e9sentation en 3D de la structure chimique du TFA (cr\u00e9dits C2DH, 3D molecules)        <\/p>\n    <\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-wrapper w-full lg:w-5\/12 lg:order-1 lg:px-32\">\n<p>Parmi les nombreux \u00ab polluants \u00e9ternels \u00bb \u00e9tudi\u00e9s au fil des ann\u00e9es, il y en a un qui attire aujourd&rsquo;hui particuli\u00e8rement l\u2019attention : l\u2019acide trifluoroac\u00e9tique (TFA). Fabriqu\u00e9 pour l&rsquo;industrie mais r\u00e9sultant \u00e9galement de la d\u00e9gradation d\u2019autres PFAS, sa concentration dans l&rsquo;environnement augmente \u00e0 un rythme alarmant. \u00ab Il existe d&rsquo;innombrables sources potentielles de TFA, dont beaucoup sont encore inconnues, et nous manquons \u00e9galement d&rsquo;\u00e9tudes sur ses effets \u00bb, explique le professeur Schymanski. \u00ab Ce que nous savons, c&rsquo;est que si la tendance actuelle se poursuit et, pire encore, si les effets n\u00e9fastes sur la sant\u00e9 se confirment, nous serons confront\u00e9s \u00e0 un d\u00e9fi de taille.&nbsp;\u00bb En effet, le TFA est tr\u00e8s difficile, et donc co\u00fbteux, \u00e0 \u00e9liminer, surtout s\u2019il p\u00e9n\u00e8tre dans notre environnement via une multitude de sources. Une enqu\u00eate r\u00e9cemment men\u00e9e par des journalistes fran\u00e7ais a estim\u00e9 que d\u00e9polluer l&rsquo;Europe des PFAS co\u00fbterait entre 95 et 2 000 milliards d&rsquo;euros sur 20 ans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-custom-buttons btn-list\"><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"py-0 wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<p>Bien que la situation semble exiger une interdiction totale de tous les PFAS, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlehtml\/2020\/em\/d0em00355g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">comme le sugg\u00e8rent certains scientifiques<\/a>, la t\u00e2che serait dantesque. \u00ab Comment mettre en \u0153uvre une r\u00e9glementation interdisant 7 millions de compos\u00e9s chimiques ?&nbsp;\u00bb s&rsquo;interroge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/lcsb-en\/people\/federica-piras\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Federica Piras<\/a>, chercheuse au sein du groupe Environmental Cheminformatics. D&rsquo;autres options consisteraient \u00e0 contr\u00f4ler les d\u00e9chets industriels avant qu&rsquo;ils ne soient rejet\u00e9s dans l&rsquo;environnement, \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer les proc\u00e9dures de traitement et \u00e0 surveiller de pr\u00e8s les niveaux de ces polluants dans nos ressources en eau, pour comprendre quels PFAS sont particuli\u00e8rement probl\u00e9matiques et doivent donc \u00eatre cibl\u00e9s en priorit\u00e9. C&rsquo;est l\u00e0 que la recherche peut aider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"les-scientifiques-de-luniversite-a-la-recherche-de-solutions\"\n    >\nLes scientifiques de l\u2019universit\u00e9 \u00e0 la recherche de solutions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab Mon projet cherche \u00e0 comprendre dans quelle mesures des zones humides artificielles pourraient contribuer \u00e0 limiter le rejet de PFAS par les stations d&rsquo;\u00e9puration et vise ainsi \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper \u00e0 une solution moins co\u00fbteuse et moins \u00e9nergivore que les m\u00e9thodes de traitement des eaux existantes \u00bb, explique Dr Piras. Il est extr\u00eamement difficile de se d\u00e9barrasser enti\u00e8rement des PFAS car la plupart des proc\u00e9d\u00e9s ont tendance \u00e0 les concentrer plut\u00f4t qu&rsquo;\u00e0 les d\u00e9truire, ce qui aboutit \u00e0 des r\u00e9sidus encore plus probl\u00e9matiques. La nature pourrait cependant apporter une solution : dans un environnement appropri\u00e9, diff\u00e9rents organismes tels que des plantes, des bact\u00e9ries et des champignons peuvent en effet coexister et coop\u00e9rer pour d\u00e9grader les PFAS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab Notre id\u00e9e est d\u2019allier l&rsquo;ozonation et les zones humides artificielles pour r\u00e9duire la charge en PFAS et \u00e9liminer d&rsquo;autres contaminants pr\u00e9occupants pr\u00e9sents dans l&rsquo;eau. Nous voulons \u00e9tudier dans quelle mesure chaque organisme vivant dans ces zones humides artificielles peut contribuer \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9limination des PFAS \u00bb, continue Dr Piras. L&rsquo;objectif des chercheurs du LCSB est de tester la faisabilit\u00e9 d\u2019un tel syst\u00e8me dans les zones rurales du Luxembourg et d&rsquo;aborder diff\u00e9rents aspects, comme par exemple l&rsquo;espace n\u00e9cessaire pour sa mise en \u0153uvre ou la capacit\u00e9 de fonctionnement d\u2019une telle zone humide. Ce projet hautement interdisciplinaire, appel\u00e9 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/research-en\/research-projects\/pfas-quest-embedding-pfas-semi-quantitative-non-targeted-strategies-into-urban-water-management-for-environmental-protection-in-luxembourg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PFAS-QUEST<\/a>, est financ\u00e9 par le programme <a href=\"https:\/\/yia.uni.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Young International Academics<\/a> et l&rsquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/research-en\/ias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for Advanced Studies<\/a> de l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 du Luxembourg. Il est men\u00e9 en \u00e9troite collaboration avec des ing\u00e9nieurs et des experts en urbanisme, dont <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/people\/joachim-hansen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prof. Joachim Hansen<\/a> et <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/people\/silvia-venditti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Silvia Venditti<\/a>, membres de l\u2019\u00e9quipe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/research-groups\/urban-water-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Urban Water Management<\/a> au sein du D\u00e9partement d\u2019ing\u00e9nierie de l\u2019universit\u00e9, et d\u2019autres partenaires internationaux.<br><br>L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe du professeur Schymanski participe de plus \u00e0 l&rsquo;analyse de l&rsquo;eau dans tout le pays afin d&rsquo;obtenir une meilleure vue d&rsquo;ensemble de la situation au Luxembourg&nbsp;: \u00ab Je comprends que les gens soient inquiets mais l&rsquo;eau du robinet est hautement contr\u00f4l\u00e9e, plus encore que l&rsquo;eau min\u00e9rale, et il y a une r\u00e9elle prise de conscience au niveau national ainsi qu\u2019une volont\u00e9 de trouver des solutions. C&rsquo;est une des principales motivations de notre travail.&nbsp;\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"rester-informe-une-etape-cle\"\n    >\nRester inform\u00e9, une \u00e9tape cl\u00e9<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Malgr\u00e9 la large couverture m\u00e9diatique, l&rsquo;eau n&rsquo;est pas la seule question urgente en termes d&rsquo;exposition aux produits chimiques. Ceux-ci sont pr\u00e9sents partout dans notre environnement, de la fum\u00e9e de cigarette aux r\u00e9cipients en plastique que nous utilisons tous les jours, en passant par les produits cosm\u00e9tiques que nous appliquons directement sur notre peau. \u00ab Il est parfois utile d&rsquo;ajuster notre perception du risque. La pr\u00e9sence de PFAS dans notre environnement ne devrait pas inciter les gens \u00e0 cesser de boire l&rsquo;eau, au risque de se d\u00e9shydrater en \u00e9t\u00e9 par exemple. D\u2019autres mesures peuvent limiter l\u2019exposition \u00e0 ces polluants plus efficacement, comme remplacer gobelets et bouteilles en plastique par des contenants en verre, c\u00e9ramique ou m\u00e9tal, ou \u00e9viter les cosm\u00e9tiques contenant des PFAS \u00bb, conclut le professeur Emma Schymanski.<br><br>Une bonne fa\u00e7on de faire des choix \u00e9clair\u00e9s et de savoir quelles comportements adopter est de rester inform\u00e9 et de savoir trouver des sources fiable. L\u00e0 aussi, l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 du Luxembourg joue son r\u00f4le en pratiquant la \u00ab&nbsp;science ouverte&nbsp;\u00bb. Le professeur Schymanski et son \u00e9quipe contribuent par exemple \u00e0 plusieurs bases de donn\u00e9es librement accessibles sur les produits chimiques existants, leurs structures et leurs propri\u00e9t\u00e9s. Rendre l&rsquo;information scientifique accessible \u00e0 tous, des sp\u00e9cialistes aux d\u00e9cideurs et au grand public, est un premier pas dans la bonne direction. Une site web, baptis\u00e9 \u00ab Mol\u00e9cules en 3D \u00bb, vient tout juste d\u2019\u00eatre d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 par les designers du <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c2dh.uni.lu\/fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">C<sup>2<\/sup>DH<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c2dh.uni.lu\/fr\/people\/daniele-guido\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daniele Guido<\/a> et <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c2dh.uni.lu\/fr\/people\/kirill-mitsurov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kirill Mitsurov<\/a>, avec des textes fournis par Emma Schymanski.
