class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-plain-text\">Animal research plays an essential role in our understanding of health and disease and in the development of treatments for both animals and humans. It has contributed to the development of most modern medicines that we know today, such as antibiotics, vaccines, surgical techniques and cancer drugs, and to the currently available non-animal alternative methods.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-custom-buttons btn-list\">\n\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<p>At the LCSB, animal research is used to study diseases of the brain and the immune system, such as epilepsy, Parkinson\u2019s disease and Alzheimer\u2019s disease. Wherever possible, we use non-animal methods, such as cell cultures or computer models. However, these methods cannot fully mimic the complex interactions in the body. Therefore, a small proportion of experiments still require the use of animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This website outlines why and when we perform animal research at the LCSB, how we are working together in Luxembourg to ensure animal welfare and how we aim to replace, reduce, and refine where possible.
