Now, emerging research shows that air pollution may also affect our brain health. Fine particulate matter, known as PM<sub>2.5<\/sub>, is a complex mixture of many chemicals that can be inhaled deep into the lungs. While PM<sub>2.5 <\/sub>exposure has long been linked to tissue damage and inflammation in the lung, its role in cognitive decline is only now gaining attention. In a recent population-based study, researchers from the universities of Rostock, Bonn and Luxembourg have uncovered a potential link: systemic inflammation, driven by an increase in monocytes \u2013 a type of white blood cells \u2013 may be a key mediator in how PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> exposure contributes to cognitive impairment. The study is published in the scientific journal <em><a href=\"https:\/\/alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/alz.14320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alzheimer\u2019s &amp; Dementia<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"fine-particulate-matter-and-its-impact-on-brain-health\"\n    >\nFine particulate matter and its impact on brain health<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> are fine airborne particles small enough to enter the lungs and even the bloodstream, posing significant health risks. Long-term exposure has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer\u2019s and Parkinson\u2019s, resulting in air pollution being listed as one of the modifiable risk factors in the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(24)01296-0\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report of the Lancet commision on dementia prevention, intervention and care<\/a>. However, the mechanisms through which PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> affects cognitive function remain poorly understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While most studies on cognitive decline focus on elderly people, there is growing evidence that chronic low-level exposure to PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> may also affect younger adults. Investigating these effects across a broader demographic may reveal how early and mid-life exposure contributes to long-term cognitive outcomes. To explore this, the researchers analysed data from over 66,000 participants in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifelines.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dutch Lifelines cohort<\/a>. Fine particulate matter may also induce systemic inflammation, leading to impairments in the brain.<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-spacer is-spacer-size-sm\"><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"the-role-of-white-blood-cells-in-cognitive-impairment\"\n    >\n<strong>The role of white blood cells in cognitive impairment<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers found that PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> exposure correlates with a decline in cognitive processing time (CPT), a measure of how quickly the brain can respond to stimuli. Interestingly, an increase in white blood cell count, particularly monocytes, the largest subtype involved in immune responses, mediated a significant part of this effect. &#8220;Systemic inflammation may act as a key intermediary, linking PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> exposure to impaired cognitive function,&#8221; explains Dr Benjamin Aretz, research scientist at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukbonn.de\/patient_innen\/international\/english\/information-for-patients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University Hospital Bonn<\/a> and first author of the study. This is the first large-scale study to directly tie changes in the number of white blood cells to the cognitive effects of fine particulate matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"inflammation-the-missing-link\"\n    >\nInflammation: The missing link?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>While PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> can directly affect the brain by crossing the blood-brain barrier and triggering local inflammation, this study highlights the broader systemic inflammation upon exposure. \u201cWe hypothesise that the number of white blood cells rise in response to pollutants,\u201d details Prof. Gabriele Doblhammer, group leader at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dzne.de\/en\/research\/research-areas\/population-health-sciences\/forschungsgruppen\/doblhammer\/research-areasfocus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DZNE in Rostock<\/a>. \u201cInflammation was already shown to play an important role in the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Hence, the inflammation we see in response to air polution may disrupt immune functions in the brain, thereby indirectly impairing cognitive health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"understanding-the-mechanisms-to-develop-preventive-action\"\n    >\n<strong>Understanding the mechanisms to develop preventive action<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As populations age and urbanisation increases, understanding and addressing the role of air pollution in neurodegenerative diseases will be more important than ever. \u201cGiven the strong correlation between air pollution and cognitive deficits, further studies are essential to pinpoint which pollutants and cellular mechanisms mediate this effect,\u201d concludes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/lcsb-en\/people\/michael-heneka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prof. Michael Heneka<\/a>, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/lcsb-en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine<\/a> (LCSB) at the University of Luxembourg and senior author of the study.
