In this practical workshop entitled \u2013 The enzyme Dld3 shows its colours &#8211; the participants will explore the world of enzymes and discover specific methods required for the characterization of proteins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"proteins-and-enzymatic-reactions\"\n    >\nProteins and enzymatic reactions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the beginning of the workshop, students are introduced to the scientific background and learn more about the enzyme Dld3. This enzyme was first characterised in the research group of Dr Carole Linster at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine of the University of Luxembourg. Thus, the workshop is thematically and also methodically very closely linked to current research. After the presentation, the participants analyse the enzyme themselves in the lab. The practical work is accompanied by brief explanations about the different experiments. Essential practical elements performed in the lab are the extraction and purification of proteins from wild type and genetically engineered <i>Escherichia coli<\/i> bacteria and yeast cells via specific column systems. Furthermore, the enzyme is detected by a Coomassie-stained protein gel and by a substrate-specificity assay. This first test run was very well received by the students and the Scienteens Lab team is looking forward to offering this course to all classes starting from school year 2018\/2019!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our one-day workshop &#8220;DNA on the tanning bed\u201d can of course still be booked.
