{"id":3644,"date":"2026-04-24T14:58:37","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T12:58:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/lcel-en\/?post_type=news&#038;p=3644"},"modified":"2026-04-24T15:56:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T13:56:12","slug":"prof-ezechiel-amani-cirimwami-nominated-for-election-as-a-judge-of-the-icc","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/lcel-en\/news\/prof-ezechiel-amani-cirimwami-nominated-for-election-as-a-judge-of-the-icc\/","title":{"rendered":"Prof. Ez\u00e9chiel Amani Cirimwami nominated for election as a judge of the ICC"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<p>The Luxembourg Centre for European Law (LCEL) at the University of Luxembourg is pleased to report that Professor Ez\u00e9chiel Amani Cirimwami has been nominated by the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a candidate for election as a judge of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icc-cpi.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Criminal Court<\/a>, with elections scheduled for December 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Ez\u00e9chiel Amani was a Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for Procedural Law from 2019 to 2023, prior to its integration into the University of Luxembourg as the LCEL. He has since maintained close academic ties with the Centre as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/lcel-en\/guest-programme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Visiting Scholar<\/a>, contributing through lectures and seminars, and participating in academic activities, notably the workshop \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/lcel-en\/research-projects\/glojpes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beyond Diplomacy &amp; Legality: The Implications of the Continued Judicialization of Peace and Security<\/a>.\u201d He also delivered a seminar on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/lcel-en\/events\/procedural-cross-fertilisation-and-judicial-autonomy-in-the-african-court-on-human-and-peoples-rights-reflections-on-the-drc-v-rwanda-judgment-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Procedural Cross-Fertilisation and Judicial Autonomy in the African Court on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights: Reflections on the DRC v. Rwanda Judgment<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He holds two PhDs in law from the Universit\u00e9 catholique de Louvain and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and is the author of a doctoral thesis on the obligation to extradite or prosecute perpetrators of international crimes, published in 2025 by Bruylant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His work focuses on international humanitarian law, international human rights law, international criminal law, and international adjudication, with a particular emphasis on procedural law and the functioning of international justice mechanisms.
