The Luxembourg Centre for European Law (LCEL) at the University of Luxembourg is pleased to report that Professor Ezéchiel Amani Cirimwami has been nominated by the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a candidate for election as a judge of the International Criminal Court, with elections scheduled for December 2026.
Professor Ezéchiel Amani was a Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for Procedural Law from 2019 to 2023, prior to its integration into the University of Luxembourg as the LCEL. He has since maintained close academic ties with the Centre as a Visiting Scholar, contributing through lectures and seminars, and participating in academic activities, notably the workshop “Beyond Diplomacy & Legality: The Implications of the Continued Judicialization of Peace and Security.” He also delivered a seminar on “Procedural Cross-Fertilisation and Judicial Autonomy in the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights: Reflections on the DRC v. Rwanda Judgment.”
He holds two PhDs in law from the Université catholique de Louvain and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and is the author of a doctoral thesis on the obligation to extradite or prosecute perpetrators of international crimes, published in 2025 by Bruylant.
His work focuses on international humanitarian law, international human rights law, international criminal law, and international adjudication, with a particular emphasis on procedural law and the functioning of international justice mechanisms. Drawing on his research at the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg, he has developed recognised expertise in the procedural dimensions of international criminal justice.
