{"id":381,"date":"2020-12-16T06:39:07","date_gmt":"2020-12-16T06:39:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/website.prod.unilu.spikeseed.cloud\/fstm-fr\/news\/young-mathematicians-exchange-about-data-science\/"},"modified":"2020-12-16T06:39:07","modified_gmt":"2020-12-16T06:39:07","slug":"young-mathematicians-exchange-about-data-science","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-fr\/news\/young-mathematicians-exchange-about-data-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Young mathematicians exchange about data science"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\"><p>From 7 to 11 December 2020, more than 60 doctoral candidates from universities around the world attended the online winter school on mathematical statistics organised by the University of Luxembourg in the frame of the ERA Chair in Mathematical Statistics and Data Science \u201cSanDAL\u201d.<\/p><p>The winter school was introduced by Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstm\/dmath\/people\/yannick_baraud\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Yannick Baraud<\/a>, ERA Chair Holder at the University of Luxembourg, who presented the European project: \u201cInitiated in 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/sandal.uni.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">SanDAL<\/a> aims to develop a high-level research group in\u00a0mathematical statistics and data science at the University of Luxembourg. On this occasion, we decided to organise a winter school for young researchers to learn about recent developments in mathematical statistics directly from leaders in their respective fields.\u201d<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-dev4-reusable-blocks-image  object-fit--contain\">\n    \n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-image unilux-custom-image-block\"\n                alt=\"\"\n            src=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/07\/picture_sandal.jpg\"\n                srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/07\/picture_sandal-300x132.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/07\/picture_sandal.jpg 500w\"\n                style=\"object-position: 50.00% 50.00%; font-family: &quot;object-fit: contain; object-position: 50.00% 50.00%;&quot;; aspect-ratio: 21\/9; object-fit: contain; width: 100%;\"\n        loading=\"lazy\"\n\/>    <\/figure><p>During the week, <strong>three internationally renowned professors<\/strong> shared their knowledge and experience with young researchers. <a href=\"http:\/\/cbutucea.perso.math.cnrs.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Cristina Butucea<\/a>, Professor of Statistics at CREST, ENSAE, IP PARIS focused on non-parametric inference under local differential privacy; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmapx.polytechnique.fr\/~karim.lounici\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Karim Loucini<\/a>, Professor at CMAP-Ecole Polytechnique presented some recent results and applications of principal component analysis and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www6.inrae.fr\/mia-paris\/Equipes\/Membres\/Stephane-Robin\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">St\u00e9phane Robin<\/a>, Senior Researcher at AgroParisTech\/INRA showed statistical inference of incomplete data models to analyse ecological networks.<\/p><p>In addition, <strong>nine doctoral candidates<\/strong> had the opportunity to give talks about their current research activities and exchange about future developments: \u201cAutomatic design of neural networks with Gaussian Processes\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstm\/dcs\/members\/ayman_makki\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Ayman Makki<\/a>; \u201cReinforcement Learning Enhanced Heterogeneous Graph Neural Network\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstm\/dcs\/members\/zhiqiang_zhong\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Zhiqiang Zhong<\/a>; \u201cp-Estimation in Mixture Models\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstm\/dmath\/people\/alexandre_lecestre\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Alexandre Lecestre<\/a>; \u201cDiffusivity Estimation for Activator-Inhibitor Models \u2013 Theory and Application to Intracellular Dynamics of the Actin Cytoskeleton\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.math.tu-berlin.de\/fachgebiete_ag_stochfinanz\/fg_mathematische_stochastik_stochastische_prozesse_in_den_neurowissenschaften\/v_menue\/mitarbeiter\/gregor_pasemann\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Gregor Pasemann<\/a>; \u201c Topological Measures for cancer drug sensitivity prediction and repositioning\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstm\/dlsm\/people\/apurva_badkas\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Apurva Badkas<\/a>; \u201c Robust estimation of a regression function in exponential families\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstm\/dmath\/people\/juntong_chen\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Juntong Chen<\/a>; \u201cExact variation for stochastic heat equation with piecewise constant coefficients and application to parameter estimation\u201d by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fsm.rnu.tn\/eng\/profil\/eya_zougar\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Eya Zougar<\/a>; \u201cNAV calculation errors and corrections of investment funds: definition and simulation to measure the statistical impact on the NAV time series\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/user.phil.hhu.de\/petitjean\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Simon Petitjean<\/a> and \u201cConcentration inequalities on M-estimators for robust mean estimating\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imo.universite-paris-saclay.fr\/~mathieu\/assets\/cv.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Timoth\u00e9e Mathieu<\/a>.<\/p><p>The winter school concluded with a special session on <strong>European funding opportunities within the next framework programme (Horizon Europe)<\/strong>, and focused on specific funding schemes for mathematics research.
