On 30 January 2018, students of the Master in Information and Computer Sciences (MICS) presented their results and learning experience on their innovative projects in front of 40 participants on Limpertsberg Campus. This event was organised by the University of Luxembourg and PMI Luxembourg Chapter with the following subject: \u00ab\u00a0How can Technology Help Society, in a way that truly adds value?\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>

Initiated in 2009 by Sergio Coronado, the course \u201cAdvance Project Management\u201d enables second-year students of the MICS<\/a> to create and develop a project in small teams of 4 to 5 people in only 12 weeks. Each year, students are challenged to demonstrate that it is possible to innovate in such a short time. For this academic year 2017-2018, six groups have taken up the challenge to manage short deadline projects with limited resources, and still deliver an end user product.<\/p>

\u00ab\u00a0This course is a tremendous opportunity for students to manage short deadline projects from the first idea to the realisation. They both learn at professional and personal levels as they have to work in groups, distribute tasks, respect deadlines, find alternatives and generate viable solutions. What I found the most interesting this year was the students\u2019 ideas, which originally and ideally met the challenge\u201d, explains Prof. Dr. Sergio Coronado.<\/p>

Here are the six projects:<\/p>

TripAid <\/strong>is a \u2018TripAdvisor\u2019-like website designed for people with disabilities to help them find barrier-free hotels, restaurants and other activities, such as concerts, museum visits, etc. The goal of TripAid is to help people to plan a trip or activities adapted to their capabilities. <\/p>

LuxBikeMap<\/strong> is an interactive map of bike paths in Luxembourg, which marks and publishes new path, provides feedback on point of interest and improved overall quality of bike paths in the country. This online platform also gives important information from other relevant websites and provides a chat forum for sharing experiences and advice between its users. <\/p>

<\/p>

Emergency GO<\/strong> is a mobile application for calling emergencies support, fast, via one click button. In a world, where it takes approximately 40 seconds for emergency services to answer the phone, this application allows its users to warn the concerned persons in less than 10 seconds by providing them all the needed information (localisation, type of accident\u2026) in any emergency situation.\u00a0 <\/p>

<\/p>

HelpShare<\/strong> is a social mobile application enabling people to seek and share help for common tasks, such as replacing car tires or cutting hedges, anywhere and at any time. The online platform disposes localisation features and provides a chat forum to its users. Its goal? Achieving a close and collaborative helping experience.<\/p>

<\/p>

PlayCraft<\/strong>: musical instruments promote mental health. However, they are highly expensive and are not for children or adults in third world countries. The project thus aims to make affordable musical instruments from scrap materials. Students have also created an instruction manual, which allows everyone to create his own instrument, such as a guitar or a drum, with the appropriate materials.<\/p>

Solwee<\/strong> is a crowdfunding platform to help students from all over the world to raise funds for educational needs, such as University fees, housing, etc. Solwee also tends to help students finding some sponsors and uses the general wallet to raise funds for all type of projects.\u00a0For more information: www.solwee.org<\/a><\/p>

The event\u2019s attendees, composed of academic staff and professionals from Luxembourg, were positively surprised by the amazing work achieved in such a short time by the students.<\/p>

The next session will take place in January 2019 with a new theme.<\/p>
