font-family: &quot;object-fit: contain; object-position: 50.00% 50.00%;&quot;; aspect-ratio: 16\/9; object-fit: contain; width: 100%;\"\n        loading=\"lazy\"\n\/>    <\/figure><p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hpc.uni.lu\/hpc-school\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">HPC School 2019<\/a>\u00a0event was again the opportunity to offer for both beginners and advanced users an up-to-date overview of the <strong>High Performance Computing (HPC)<\/strong> developments recently performed within the University of Luxembourg and abroad, as well as instructions and practical sessions on a variety of topics representative of research activities and domains present at the university that benefit from HPC.<\/p><p>The traditional inaugural keynote\u00a0presented by Dr.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstm\/dcs\/members\/sebastien_varrette\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">S\u00e9bastien Varrette<\/a> offered an up-to-date overview of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gouvernement.lu\/fr\/actualites\/toutes_actualites\/communiques\/2019\/06-juin\/14-schneider-meluxina.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Meluxina<\/a> within the University but also at the national and European level, especially with regards the definition of a <strong>HPC and Big Data strategic developments<\/strong> and the official announcement of the <strong>National HPC Competence Center<\/strong> supercomputer in Luxembourg.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-dev4-reusable-blocks-image  object-fit--contain\">\n    \n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-image unilux-custom-image-block\"\n                alt=\"\"\n            src=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/07\/img_9060.jpg\"\n                srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/07\/img_9060-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/07\/img_9060.jpg 500w\"\n                style=\"object-position: 50.00% 50.00%; font-family: &quot;object-fit: contain; object-position: 50.00% 50.00%;&quot;; aspect-ratio: 3\/2; object-fit: contain; width: 100%;\"\n        loading=\"lazy\"\n\/>    <\/figure><p>A second keynote delivered the second day by researcher\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/lcsb\/people\/sarah_peter\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarah Peter<\/a> covered the <a href=\"https:\/\/hpc.uni.lu\/systems\/iris\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Iris Cluster<\/a> which is of particular importance with the release of the<strong>data management aspects<\/strong> and the incoming decommissioning of the old HPC facilities enforcing the migration of data and computational workflows toward the current flagship production system, named <strong>\u00a0GDPR regulation<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Otherwise, most of the time was dedicated to 18 practical parallel sessions lectured by the <a href=\"https:\/\/hpc.uni.lu\/about\/team.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">HPC team<\/a> together with leading computational scientists of the University of Luxembourg and HPC technologists, namely Dr. Varrette, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstc\/computer_science_and_communications_research_unit\/members\/valentin_plugaru\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Valentin Plugaru<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/lcsb\/people\/sarah_peter\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarah Peter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstc\/computer_science_and_communications_research_unit\/members\/hyacinthe_cartiaux\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Hyacinthe Cartiaux<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstc\/computer_science_and_communications_research_unit\/members\/clement_parisot\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Cl\u00e9ment Parisot<\/a>, Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstc\/computer_science_and_communications_research_unit\/members\/frederic_pinel_2\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Frederic Pinel<\/a>, Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstc\/computer_science_and_communications_research_unit\/members\/emmanuel_kieffer\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Emmanuel Kieffer<\/a>, Dr. <a href=\"http:\/\/staff.uni.lu\/xavier.besseron\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Xavier Besseron<\/a> and Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/research\/fstc\/life_sciences_research_unit\/people\/aurelien_ginolhac\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Aur\u00e9lien Ginolhac<\/a>.<\/p><p>These sessions covered a wide range of topics, such as:<\/p><ul class=\"ulux-list\"><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">Access to and interaction with the HPC infrastructures<\/li><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">HPC workflow management, including monitoring and performance engineering profiling<\/li><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">HPC programming and usage of the main software available on the platform, with dedicated sessions directed towards Scalable Science<\/li><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">MATLAB\/Mathematica, R, Python, Big Data analytics, Bioinformatic workflows, Deep and Machine learning, Mixed-Integer Programming (MIP) optimization with CPLEX and Gurobi<\/li><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">Virtualisation with Singularity containers on the clusters<\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-dev4-reusable-blocks-image  object-fit--contain\">\n    \n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-image unilux-custom-image-block\"\n                alt=\"\"\n            src=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/07\/img_9047.jpg\"\n                srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/07\/img_9047-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/07\/img_9047.jpg 500w\"\n                style=\"object-position: 50.00% 50.00%; The user session proposed on the second day was also well appreciated, as it presented research outcomes as well as HPC aspects from some of the platform\u2019s users, covering a broad range of domains:<\/p><ul class=\"ulux-list\"><li class=\"ulux-list-item\"><strong>Bio-informatics<\/strong>, with a talk entitled \u201cExploratory analysis of ATAC-seq data from dopaminergic neurons\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/lcsb\/people\/nikola_maria_de_lange\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Nikola Maria De Lange<\/a><\/li><li class=\"ulux-list-item\"><strong>Distributed Ledgers<\/strong>, with a presentation of \u201cRepuCoin: Reputation-based Byzantine consensus\u201d \u00a0by Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/snt\/people\/jeremie_decouchant\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Decouchant<\/a><\/li><li class=\"ulux-list-item\"><strong>Computational Physics<\/strong>, with a talk on \u201cHigh Performance Parallel Coupling of OpenFOAM and XDEM\u201d, by Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstm\/doe\/members\/xavier_besseron\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Xavier Besseron<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p><figure class=\"wp-block-dev4-reusable-blocks-image  object-fit--contain\">\n    \n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-image unilux-custom-image-block\"\n                alt=\"\"\n            src=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/07\/img_8877.jpg\"\n                srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/07\/img_8877-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/07\/img_8877.jpg 500w\"\n                style=\"object-position: 50.00% 50.00%; font-family: &quot;object-fit: contain; object-position: 50.00% 50.00%;&quot;; aspect-ratio: 3\/2; object-fit: contain; width: 100%;\"\n        loading=\"lazy\"\n\/>    <\/figure>From left: Cl\u00e9ment Parisot, Frederic Pinel, Hyacinthe Cartiaux, Filip Ku\u010der\u00e1k and Emmanuel Kieffer<\/p><p>Finally, as indicated above, young Slovak <strong>Filip Ku\u010der\u00e1k<\/strong> used his prize to visit the University\u2019s HPC facility and attended the two-day event as winner of the Computational Science Award for his project \u201cTrevo: Trees as a results of an algorithm\u00a0\u00bb during the\u00a0European Union Contest for Young Scientists\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/eucys2018.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">EUCYS 2018<\/a>) which took place in September 2018 in Dublin.
