On 13 December 2018, the University of Luxembourg and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) organised the first business club day of the Doctoral Training Unit \u00ab\u00a0Materials for Sensing and Energy Harvesting\u00a0\u00bb (MASSENA). This event was a great opportunity for the 22 PhD students to meet and exchange with industrial players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fruitful exchanges on materials science<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n

During the event, industrial and academic players gave insights on both industry needs and cutting-edge research about energy harvesting and sensing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Etienne Jacqu\u00e9<\/a>, Corporate R&D Manager at Sohini Kar Narayan<\/a> spoke about the expectations and needs industry has for young researchers while Prof. Cebi group<\/strong> from the University of Cambridge<\/strong> gave an exciting lecture about the development and application of nanostructured polymers in many fields of energy harvesting and sensing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, two young professionals Jan Sendler<\/a> (ASML) and Christian Pauly<\/a> (IEE), who had been doctoral candidates themselves a few years ago, gave insights into their activities in industry and discussed how working in industry is different from academia.<\/p>\n\n\n

Poster session<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with testimony, the doctoral candidates presented their work and latest results through six talks and a poster session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scientific advisory board of MASSENA represented by Prof. Uwe Rau<\/a> (Forschungszentrum J\u00fclich), Dr. Jumana Boussey<\/a> (CEA Grenoble) and Etienne Jacqu\u00e9<\/a> (Cebi group) actively discussed with PhD candidates and gave the coordinators valuable recommendations in order to organise and manage the MASSENA project and next business day planned for autumn 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cMASSENA candidates enjoyed the interaction with people from industry and asked many questions to help them develop their career\u201d said Prof. Susanne Siebentritt<\/a> from the University of Luxembourg who leads the MASSENA project together with Dr. Emmanuel Defay<\/a> from the LIST.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Launched in 2016 with the financial support of the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR)<\/a>, the DTU MASSENA highlights the high-level expertise in materials research of the two institutions and especially of the Physics and Materials Science Research Unit (PhyMS)<\/a> at Uni.lu and the Materials Research and Technology Department (MRT)<\/a> at LIST.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
