This was again the opportunity to offer up-to-date overview of the HPC (High Performance Computing) developments recently performed within the University, as well as instructions and practical sessions on a variety of topics representative of research activities and domains present at the university that benefit from HPC.<\/p><p>With around 90 highly motivated participants, the seventh edition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hpc.uni.lu\/hpc-school\/2018\/06\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Uni.lu HPC School<\/a> was a great success. Apart from the traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/hpc.uni.lu\/blog\/2018\/ul-hpc-school-2018-keynotes-slides\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">keynote<\/a> presented by Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/varrette.gforge.uni.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">S\u00e9bastien Varrette<\/a> (manager of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hpc.uni.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">HPC facility<\/a> and of the associated expert team of system administrators with Prof.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/research\/fstc\/computer_science_and_communications_research_unit\/members\/pascal_bouvry\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Professor doing research on parallel computing and optimisation techniques.\" rel=\"noopener\">Pascal Bouvry<\/a>), which offered an up-to-date overview of the HPC and Big Data (BD) developments within the University but also at the national and European level, a series of practical sessions and keynotes were offered. In particular, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hpc.uni.lu\/about\/team.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">HPC team<\/a>, together with leading computational scientists of the University of Luxembourg and HPC technologists (namely Dr. S. Varrette, Valentin Plugaru, Sarah Peter, Hyacinthe Cartiaux, Cl\u00e9ment Parisot and Dr. Aur\u00e9lien Ginolhac) covered in two parallel sessions a wide range of topics, such as:<\/p><ul class=\"ulux-list\"><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">Access to and interaction with the HPC infrastructures<\/li><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">HPC challenges, especially as regards the storage data management (backups, git, GDPR, quotas)<\/li><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">HPC workflow management (for sequential and parallel tasks)<\/li><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">HPC programming and usage of the main software available on the platform, with dedicated sessions directed towards Matlab, R, Python, OpenMP\/MPI, MultiPhysics, Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Big Data analytics (with Hadoop and Spark), Deep and Machine learning (Tensorflow, Keras\u2026) etc.<\/li><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">Performance engineering for HPC debugging and profiling<\/li><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">Software environnent management<\/li><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">Virtualisation with singularity containers on the clusters<\/li><\/ul><p>It is worth to note that following the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Open_science\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Science<\/a> paradigm, the material of all proposed tutorials is publicly available since the very first edition on <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ULHPC\/tutorials\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">github<\/a> and on <a href=\"http:\/\/ulhpc-tutorials.readthedocs.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/ulhpc-tutorials.readthedocs.io\/<\/a>.<\/p><p>In all cases, questions and exchanges were fruitful during this seventh edition of the event. Combining large computing power and huge data storage capacities, the facility offers a competitive and attractive research environment to ensure cutting-edge results in time. Today, more than 500 computer scientists, engineers, physicists, material science researchers, biologists, and even economists have the opportunity to run on this platform intensive computations and perform Big Data analytics as part of their research.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/hpc.uni.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"The High Performance Computing (HPC) at the University of Luxembourg\" rel=\"noopener\">The HPC facility<\/a>\u00a0is managed by an expert team under the responsibility of Prof.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/research\/fstc\/computer_science_and_communications_research_unit\/members\/pascal_bouvry\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Professor doing research on parallel computing and optimisation techniques.\" rel=\"noopener\">Pascal Bouvry<\/a> and Dr\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/research\/fstc\/computer_science_and_communications_research_unit\/members\/sebastien_varrette\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Research Associate specialised in distributed platforms security and HPC\/Cloud systems.\" rel=\"noopener\">S\u00e9bastien Varrette<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/research\/fstc\/computer_science_and_communications_research_unit\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"At the Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication\" rel=\"noopener\">Computer Science and Communications Research Unit (CSC)<\/a>. Composed of\u00a0several clusters of compute nodes, the HPC platform has kept growing over time thanks to the continuous efforts of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hpc.uni.lu\/about\/team.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Organising, administrating, and developing the existing HPC environment\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Luxembourg HPC Team<\/a>. It now provides a\u00a0total computing capacity of 423 TeraFlops\u00a0(1 TeraFlops = 10<sup>12<\/sup>\u00a0\u00a0floating point operations per second) (when including GPU accelerators) and around\u00a08.8 PetaByte of shared data\u00a0storage (1 Petabyte = 10<sup>6<\/sup>gigabytes). The\u00a0HPC centre of the University of Luxembourg is\u00a0one of the major actors in HPC and Big Data for the Greater Region Saar-Lor-Lux.<\/p><p>Having this platform available for researchers and PhD students at the University of Luxembourg is a chance to deeply accelerate their workflow and analysis, however the effective usage of such a complex system requires both talent and system skills to understand the impact of its personal workflow on the global performances of the system.
