{"id":6930,"date":"2023-12-15T13:59:02","date_gmt":"2023-12-15T12:59:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/?post_type=news&#038;p=6930"},"modified":"2024-08-09T09:40:03","modified_gmt":"2024-08-09T07:40:03","slug":"making-breast-cancer-surgery-more-effective","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/news\/making-breast-cancer-surgery-more-effective\/","title":{"rendered":"Making breast cancer surgery more effective"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/en\/person\/NTAwMDA5NjlfX1N0w6lwaGFuZSBCT1JEQVM=\/\">Prof. St\u00e9phane Bordas<\/a> from the University of Luxembourg together with postdoctoral researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/medicine-health\/about\/our-people\/academic-staff\/arnaud-mazier.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Arnaud Mazier<\/a> from the University of Sidney have recently published their paper entitled:\u201d Breast simulation pipeline: from medical imaging to patient-specific simulations\u201d in the Clinical Biomechanics journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funded by the doctoral training network \u201cRapid Biomechanics Simulation for Personalized Clinical Design\u201d (RAINBOW), researchers St\u00e9phane Bordas and Arnaud Mazier have developed a new way to make breast surgery more precise and personalised. They tackled a common problem: when doctors take a scan before surgery, the breast can move a lot between the scan and the actual operation. This new method helps predict these movements, making surgery more effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThink of it like a GPS for surgeons, it helps them navigate and operate with more accuracy. We used a computer programme to create a personalised plan for each patient. We tested it and found it was really accurate, almost like having a personalised map for each surgery. For instance, we discovered that a part of the breast called the infra-mammary ligament, really matter in the surgery plan. This is a big step forward in making breast surgery more precise and tailored to each patient\u201d, explains Prof. Bordas from the <a href=\"https:\/\/doe.uni.lu\/\">Department of Engineering<\/a> at the University of Luxembourg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About RAINBOW<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched in 2018 as a four-year project, the RAINBOW network involved 7 universities, 1 hospital, and 7 industrial partners across Denmark, Spain, Luxembourg, England, France, and Germany to train 15 PhD fellows in scientific skills and transferable skills, enabling them to take up careers in the academic as well as in the non-academic sectors.
