Mich\u00e8le Weber and Melanie Reuter from the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) as well as Nicole Paschek from the University of Luxembourg congratulated the winners in the name of the Jury.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-dev4-reusable-blocks-image  object-fit--contain\">\n    \n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-image unilux-custom-image-block\"\n                alt=\"\"\n            src=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/07\/science_writing_competition_2021_winners-scaled.jpg\"\n                srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/07\/science_writing_competition_2021_winners-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/07\/science_writing_competition_2021_winners-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/07\/science_writing_competition_2021_winners-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/07\/science_writing_competition_2021_winners-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/07\/science_writing_competition_2021_winners-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\"\n                style=\"object-position: 50.00% 50.00%; font-family: &quot;object-fit: contain; object-position: 50.00% 50.00%;&quot;; aspect-ratio: 3\/2; object-fit: contain; width: 100%;\"\n        loading=\"lazy\"\n\/>    <\/figure><p><i>From left to right: Nicole Paschek (Uni.lu), winners Marie-Alix Dalle (Uni.lu), Daniele Proverbio (LCSB), Nicolas Stamets (LISER), Hichem Omrani (LISER) as well as Melanie Reuter (FNR \/ science.lu)<\/i><\/p><p><strong>The first places<\/strong><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/lcsb\/people\/daniele_proverbio\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniele Proverbio<\/a>, a doctoral candidate at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwde.uni.lu\/lcsb\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">LCSB<\/a>), impressed the Jury with his article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/science.lu\/de\/science-writing-competition-2021\/skin-parasites-your-face-crawls-life-literally\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Your face crawls with life \u2013 literally<\/a>\u201d, a text about the not so little creatures living on our faces.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/lu.linkedin.com\/in\/lilia-hassouna-62831b10b\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Lilia Hassouna<\/a>, a recent PhD graduate from the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.list.lu\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">LIST<\/a>), impressed the Jury with the article entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/science.lu\/de\/science-writing-competition-2021\/pourra-t-un-jour-escalader-les-murs-comme-spiderman\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Pourra-t-on un jour escalader les murs comme Spiderman?<\/a>\u201d, in which she explains whether we will ever be able to climb walls like Spiderman.<\/p><p>The Jury especially likes the choice of topic, the writing style and the use of humour, which make both articles an entertaining and enjoyable reading. Her article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/science.lu\/de\/science-writing-competition-2021\/science-research-society-relational-status-complex\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Science, Research, Society. Relational Status: complex<\/a>\u201d gives insights into what science and research are. According to the Jury it is \u201cambitious to choose this general almost philosophical topic\u201d.<\/p><p>Finally the article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/science.lu\/de\/science-writing-competition-2021\/tracking-air-pollution-luxembourg-land-space\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Tracking Air Pollution in Luxembourg from Land &#038; Space<\/a>\u201d explains what role busses and space satellites play in tracking air pollutants in Luxembourg. It convinced the Jury with its \u201ccatchy examples and links to our daily-lifes\u201d. It was co-written by <a href=\"https:\/\/liser.elsevierpure.com\/en\/persons\/hichem-omrani\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Hichem Omrani<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/liser.elsevierpure.com\/en\/persons\/nicolas-stamets\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicolas Stamets<\/a>, who are both working at the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liser.lu\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">LISER<\/a>).<\/p><p>As both submissions received exactly the same score from the Jury, the organizers decided to award the second place, which is decorated with 250\u20ac in prize money, twice and announce no third place instead. All articles are published on <a href=\"https:\/\/science.lu\/de\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">science.lu<\/a> and can be read following <a href=\"https:\/\/science.lu\/fr\/science-writing-competition-2021\/discover-winners-writing-competition-research-everywhere\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">this link<\/a> or by clicking on the respective titles.<\/p><p><strong>The competition<\/strong><\/p><p>The Jury received 28 submissions from people working in science and research in Luxembourg. Most of the articles were written in English but other participants also submitted in French, German and Luxembourgish. Each text was anonymized and read by two Jurors of an interdisciplinary as well as multi-lingual Jury consisting of Mich\u00e8le Weber (FNR \/ science.lu), Malou Fraiture (LIH), Constance Lausecker (LIST), Till Dembeck (FHSE), Pierre Picard (FDEF) and Nicole Paschek (FSTM).<\/p><p>The competition was organised by the Doctoral Education in Science Communication (<a href=\"https:\/\/descom.uni.lu\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">DESCOM<\/a>) project of the University of Luxembourg in collaboration with science.lu and supported by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR).
