To develop awareness and understanding of the strategic importance of communicating science, the University of Luxembourg has recently launched a new course \u201cScience Communication Skills\u201d for doctoral candidates.<\/p><p>This course has been developed within the framework of the Doctoral Education in Science Communication project (<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/studies\/fstc\/doctoral_education_in_science_communication_descom\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">DESCOM<\/a>) to educate young scientists in how to best communicate science to a non-specialised audience. \u201cWe believe that science communication skills are an ever more important skill\u201d, says Prof. Serge Haan, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication (FSTC). \u201cBut not all researchers feel comfortable doing this. Together with several other experts in the field, he will give the doctoral candidates an understanding of basic concepts in science communication and explain the organisational structures involved.<\/p><p>The training is supported by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnr.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">FNR<\/a>)\u00a0\u2013 especially by Jean-Paul Bertemes, Head of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnr.lu\/science-in-society\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Science in Society<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and by the Doctoral School in Science and Engineering (<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/fstc\/doctoral_school_in_science_and_engineering_dsse\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">DSSE<\/a>).<\/p><p>The course is a new offer within the Transferable Skills Training, a set of common courses offered to PhD students to increase their skills in fields that are not directly related to their research, but can be used during their doctoral period and are important for their future career.<\/p><p>DESCOM\u00a0has been launched in 2018 with the support of the FNR and the DSSE.
