14 students have joined the University of Luxembourg in September 2023 to develop their knowledge and skills in high-performance computing (HPC). They are the first cohort from the Master in HPC <\/a>offered at the University of Luxembourg and the European Master in HPC<\/a> (EUMaster4HPC) offered by 8 awarding European universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Innovative programme<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Master was conceived to answer the growing market and the increasing demand for highly skilled graduates in supercomputing. During the first year, students obtain a dual skills set<\/strong> on high-level concepts such as distributed and parallel programming and low-level aspects such as Linux administration, HPC software stack and computer architecture. During the second year, the University of Luxembourg proposes a specialisation in high performance data analytics (HPDA) and machine learning methods<\/strong>. During the fourth and last semester, they will work in collaboration with researchers to write their Master thesis. They also have the possibility to do an internship at academic institutes, HPC companies and supercomputer centres in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to this curriculum, we organise HPC-related events all year\u2019s round. In particular, we organise visit of the HPC centre of the University, and Meluxina, the Luxembourgish national HPC centre. These events allow students to meet with HPC professionals, extend their network and find internship and job opportunities more rapidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the Master, students will demonstrate a high-level of knowledge and skills in data analytics, computational science, parallel programming<\/strong>. Thus, they will be able to work as HPC experts in all the fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur Master relies on innovative curriculum and teaching paradigms, leading universities, top HPC experts, access to supercomputing centres and strong industry support. I am deeply convinced that in particular the new specialisation in data analytics and artificial intelligence (HPC\/HPDA\/AI) will have a great impact on the development of companies, R&D areas and the European economy as a whole\u201d, mentions Prof. Pascal Bouvry<\/a>, Course Director of the Master.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kacper Kramarz-Fernandez<\/a>, student representative of the Master, shares his first impression: \u201cI like how high-performance computing is combined with artificial intelligence, we had one purely machine learning\/artificial intelligence course and another where we picked and parallelised some algorithmic machine learning problem.
