{"id":5333,"date":"2023-09-26T12:46:10","date_gmt":"2023-09-26T10:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/?post_type=news&#038;p=5333"},"modified":"2023-09-26T12:51:25","modified_gmt":"2023-09-26T10:51:25","slug":"new-professor-in-differential-geometry","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/news\/new-professor-in-differential-geometry\/","title":{"rendered":"New Professor in differential geometry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/en\/person\/NTAwNzI0OTBfX0thcmluIE1FTE5JQ0s=\/\">Karin Melnick<\/a> recenlty joined the Department of Mathematics at the University of Luxembourg as Professor in differential geometry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She shares her background, former experience and explains her future challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is your research about?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My research is centered around the role of symmetry in differential geometry, as a framework for classifying geometric structures as well as the underlying topology of spaces.&nbsp; I am particularly interested in conformal geometry and in Lorentzian geometry; the latter is the setting for General Relativity.&nbsp; For the past 14 years I have been a professor at the University of Maryland in the USA, with research stays at the Max-Planck-Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, the University of Heidelberg, and the University of Strasbourg, among others.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why did you join the University of Luxembourg?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The University of Luxembourg attracted me with its large and vibrant group in Geometry, the advantageous working conditions, and the multicultural and multilingual environment.&nbsp; The geographic location allows me to bridge my strong professional connections with French mathematics with the personal connections of my German-American family.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What will be your main challenges?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In the coming months and years I want to build up my research group, with support from the FNR and European funding agencies.&nbsp;The opportunities in this regard are quite exciting.
